The end of football as we know it?

Don't think that would be allowed under EU law.

more likely a time for the 'top 4' to break away and form a European Super League.

This doesn't make sense for them - they might have got almost all they can earn from the Premier League in the UK and Champions League in Europe, but as it is they get money twice over - the real potential is for them to bring back the "Game 39" thing because that had real potential to expand them into overseas markets, which then means they're getting paid three times over and I doubt that a Euro-League would earn them THAT much extra over the current CL+Premiership arrangement.

Anyway, boiling frogs and all that. This is nothing new, its merely a rehash of the Abramovich situation - even though things are getting worse they've been like this for some years now, and the roots of football's problems stretch all the way back to the creation of the Premiership. Of course, a lot of people on here are fans of Arsenal/Liverpool/ManUtd, so who cares when its going your way hm?

one question that puzzles me, as said before fan ticket sales keep the club flowing, now with city in huge amounts of money they could basically play in the far east on some dodgy pavement and still be sound from tv money, (OK it wouldn't be a good business model all pie in the sky stuff)

BUT if e.g Liverpool get taken over, why do they need to build New Anfield for the gates?

May as well post this here......

Amanda Staveley, the women who brokered the City deal and has also been brokering the Liverpool - DIC deal, has just been interviewed on R5 Live about the City deal and was asked about Liverpool and confirmed negotiations are on going but a deal would only be done at the right price.

Put it this way, even if Man City bought the best 11 players in the world (I say 11 because why would the 12th-18th best players in the world sit on a bench?) there is no guarantee they will win, they're just another team after all. Man U have probably the two best CBs in the world atm and arguably the best defence. No reason why they can't defend against Villa/Torres/Robinho etc.

I doubt the amount of season tickets available would rise too much, particularly amongst those who would be in the Kop. Those who are the typical out-of-town fan who come for one game a season, buy some stuff in the club shop etc. are one potential source of income, while old locations such as Anfield typically don't have the room for the amount of executive boxes etc. which are where the real money is - just look at New Wembley's middle tier, that's where the money is on matchdays now. As for regular prices, an extra 20,000*40*19=£15.2m, which is conservative with regards to prices and doesn't include Cup games + box revenue + merchandise + refreshments. There's a whole lot of matchday revenue which isn't just limited to tickets, and they're inevitably going to want to max out their revenue in every area, regardless - sure an extra ~£15m is less than half a season's TV money for even the bottom end but if theres more they'll be after it.

As for players wages, ok some players are rather on the greedy side but I personally don't have a problem with them being paid quite well because lets face it, with the types of people owning teams these days it'd just be put into the back pockets of people like Glazer etc - it wouldn't be any cheaper when they can see how pricey things can be. £100,000 a week does take the **** but if people were raking in billions based on what you did you'd want a slice of it too wouldn't you?

Why wouldn't it be allowed under EU law? Other sports do it.

The problem with a salary cap is that it would have to be done internationally or clubs from other countries that aren't restricted will take all the players.

It shouldn't be an individual salary cap but a cap per club if they introduce one, then each club can still have a few superstars

Indeed, I'd love to see this but clubs like Man UTD won't be too happy because they'll lose most of their squad to foreign clubs, at least it would bring some equality to the Premiership.

The news flying round about Man Cities new owners saddens me really... Chelsea started it and now City will carry it on. Also there's this news.

Chelsea didn't start it. Its the way it's almost always been. Liverpool had huge financial clout in the 80's. I remember well the madness that surrounded John Barnes 14k per week.

Blackburn bought a title, Newcastle almost did. Manu were able to outbid anyone for years. Chelsea bought two silver cups for 250 million.

Now man city.

TBH I think the games a shadow of what it was in the 70's and 80's. I don't care about it as much anymore, it's just whichever club throws the most money at it. The gulf between the top 4 and the rest is so huge they may as well have their own league and you can buy a slot if you have a billionaire.

I'd like both a wage cap and a seasonal spending cap but it won't happen.

Not the same though... all teams in the past still had to balance the books. Also don't you think Liverpool earned that right lol? Ok a few million here and there and most went into debt but Chelsea were about to do a Leeds and already in serious trouble. How much debt would they be in if he pulled the plug... half a billion or something daft?

Agree with all that.

Why don't DIC just make Liverpool’s American owners an offer they can't refuse rather than going after a club they obviously see as second best? After all the price of the club pales into comparison against the sums of money they're talking about spending on player/stadiums etc. The club is essentially just a brand, and with all due respect the Liverpool FC brand is a lot more commercially viable than Spurs.

I agree though, the game of football as we knew it is gone forever. I think it's about time some kind of capping was introduced before things get seriously out of hand.
