The England Cricket Thread

What a game of cricket. Disappointed with the result but that finish would have been so drab if England hadn't gone for it on day 1. Very fine margins with England missing too many chances whilst australia too everything they got. The rest of the series will be fantastic but England need to obviously hit straightt back.

Bowling line up needs looking at between now and then, to work out what we can do if Ali can't get that finger sorted, although as many wickets were claimed by both teams, so very evenly matched.

The declaration in the first innings was a mistake, Root on fire, why not just leave him there for another 20+?? - I understand why to a degree but we should have just whacked the score up more.

That said, without the last partnership stand of the Aussies England would have most likely won…

Well done Australia, much as it pains me to say it!

Ultimately, I don’t really care, a fantastic start to what’s looking like a thoroughly entertaining series.

We lost with about 10 balls remaining. Had we not declared it would have been a draw with no shot at winning. We're an aggressive team and play to win.

If anything, they timed the declaration perfectly. A few dropped catches and Broads no ball is what cost us.

The declaration is what gave us such a grand battle on the 5th day. It was a sound decision, and could easily have resulted in an English victory.

England declared on the first day with 2 wickets in hand, and we won on the last day with 2 wickets in hand. There's a kind of poetry to it.

If the run rate last night from you boys was more in line with the rest of the test. I suspect it'd have been an easy England win.

Draw than a loss, arguably a better result.

As I said though earlier, who cares? What a game of cricket!

Plus there was that short overcast spell Aus got to bowl in.

I want to change nothing in the tactics, so entertaining.
Yep, that and the Broad no ball changed the game. Still, England were close with basically no bowling attack to speak of. Anderson was poor, Ali was understandably undercooked and Stokes looks nowhere near full fitness. They performed above par on such a flat pitch in the circumstances.

Fine margins but I’d say England lost that in the field to many mistakes behind the stumps a few other missed opportunities etc test cricket played like this is a much better spectacle although I suspect we will hand Australia the trophy they one thus match with hardly any contribution from the three best batsmen in the world they won’t fail all summer!

Also to add, on a less placid pitch that declaration would have been spot on. It encouraged the Aussies to play and opened up the game but there was just so little in it for the bowlers.

Leach or a fit Ali and England win that. Fine margins.

great test overall..cant wait for the second.

but hats off to the Aussies too though, technically batted without there two to players, Labuschagne and Smith..well controlled by England.

and even though Ali was in some pain, he still plodded on..kudos.

Spin situation is a concern, it will take a while for Ali’s fingers to heal and there is a lot of cricket and not much rest time this summer so we might have to role the dice again on that one!

Depends on the pitch I guess, but would it be that mad to drop Ali for Foakes and have Root make up the overs? Granted Moeen got through a lot of work in the first innings but once his finger split he could offer very little. Fair play to him for carrying on though.

Can't criticise that game at all. Sport at it's finest, two quality teams battling it out at the highest level. You can 'what if' all sorts but in the end it came down to fine margins.

Hope the series continues in this vein....shame there's no Trent Bridge test otherwise I'd be all over some day 4/5 tickets.

Root is our best batsman and an average spin bowler I really wouldn’t want to risk impacting his batting by having him bowl a ton of overs and with stokes being an emergency only bowler we need a spinner who is going to get through some big numbers!
