The England Cricket Thread

But Broad can bat? At least he used to be able to bat.

If the final three had been left with 30-40 to get that would've been doable-ish, did anyone work out how many singles Stoakes gave up?

I kind of question why the tail-end needs to be so weak when there are players we could bring in who have a better record
Since being hit on the head in 2015 he averages 13.

Because he's played a long time Broad probably seems better than he is, 13 50s and a ton to his name, but when you consider he has over 50 sixes (nearly 5x as many as all-time leading English run scorer Sir Alastair Cook) and an average of under 20 it's apparent he's basically someone who likes a swing. Earlier in his career I thought he had potential to be an all-rounder but it hasn't panned out that way.

He was definitely a bowling all rounder up until the 2015 incident. He probably only averaged 25-30 but was always capable of a 50 batting at 8. A lot of all rounders are pretty streaky - Stokes is no exception.

This kind of thing would have seen England almost over the line yesterday, I think we simply must have a number 8 or 9 who is a bit more of an all round than we've got.

If, par example, Carey's throw missed the stumps and they could have run an overthrow, would that have been alright? Considering Bairstow says he thought the ball was dead? Or should he have made sure it wasn't missfielded/overthrown before wandering out his crease?

No matter which way I look at it, Bairstows only got himself to blame and the stumping was just an excellent piece of glovework from probably the worlds best keeper at the moment. His catch above his head to remove Duckett was the best ive seen from a keeper for many a year.

Its also a bit rich of his staring out the Aussies at the end after he tried to do it to Labuschange and failed absolutely miserably.

I found a nice site that lets you apply complex filters and stuff :) http://www.cricmetric.com/playersta...nd_date=2015-01-01&start_over=0&end_over=9999

Basically he averaged 24 up until the start of 2015.

2015 onwards, he averages 13. I expect more from a #8, although he's sometimes lower (e.g. if Mooen Ali is playing).

Don't be put off by the simplistic look of this website, it's actually really good, you can do all sorts of stuff with the advanced filters like look at specific matchups, grounds etc etc.

I disagree. In the Mankad you’re basically not concentrating on bowling and your job but going for a cheap wicket, I think it really brings the game down. It doesn’t take any skill or ability.

In this case it was quite canny. They’d noticed him doing it for the previous four deliveries. I think it was dosy batting if I am honest
I always see Mankad's from a different view - the backing batsman is trying to cheat by gaining a yard or two. And that's from a batters point of view. I would always try and have a a quiet word with any batter constantly doing that, as a formal warning always gets hackles up.

Bairstow is just salty that he couldn't catch the ball let alone hit the stumps when he tried

If he lost some weight he'd move a lot better. He looks like a player from the 80's.

This is still rolling on, Travis Head lying to Melbourne biggest newspaper this morning. Barely any Aussies say bloody oath, I very much doubt Bairstow said it

Pope out, Woakes in.
Anderson out, Ali in.
Tongue out, Wood in (as the actress said to the bishop).

Anderson and Tongue are being "rested" apparently...

Glad to see Wood in the team instead of an out of sorts Anderson, but not sure Tongue needs a rest, I thought he did OK last time. I guess they wanted to bring a spinner back in now his finger's had time to recover.

surprised about Tongue being dropped, but he was expensive, and bringing Woakes and Wood in provides that much needed pace we've been lacking in the first two tests.

Can't wait for this test. Hope it's a belter.

Going to have it on the OLED directly behind my work laptop and attempt to pretend to get some work done.

Hopefully Wood, Stokes, and Ali can hobble through the match ok.

I think Jimmy will retire after this series.
