I agree. Root is well capable of hitting a double hundred. Near the end of the day though, he might have been tiring a bit, and prone to lose concentration, costing him his wicket. Might as well stick a night watchmen in for 10 minutes or so to protect him. If another batsman had gone out there, they naturally would have played like a normal batting pair.

Makes total sense.

That would be my thinking too. If England can get to 400-500, they might not even need a second innings. Which gives them plenty of time to bowl Australia out.
 
What a dire performance. I predicted England would win this series 4-1, and it looks like I'm going to be right.
 
Saw the highlights of the Stokes catch last night - what a take! One Collingwood would have been proud of.

11am I believe.

It's probably a historical thing I guess, but it also limits the amount of overs/time in the field so it doesn't get too ridiculous regarding the load on bowlers etc. Also if you had super long days as standard it may not be possible in every cricket location depending on the time of year.

Just saw 11am was announced as well.

And i can understand about limiting the time/overs so the bowlers aren't completely worn out. But you could still have the same 80 odd overs in a day, but if they started at say 9am, that should mean finishing about 5pm, but at least giving more flexibility in the event of bad weather.
