Who would have thought a British Prime Minister would have given up half our rebate for next-to-nothing? This is another reason why I want out - I just don't trust our politicians not to give away more and more sovereignty to the EU. They keep doing this, I don't know why, I can only speculate but now they've actually let the common people have their say and I say we give them a bloody nose.

So you don't trust our government to make good decisions, yet the return of sovereignty would surely make this more of an issue? You're full of inconsistencies.

Because all the EU funding for science is put to such good use....

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/science-environment-35809116

Science relies on research of all types to further understanding. Some will not have obvious applications at the time, but can still have profound impacts. It really frustrates me when politicians say that science research funding should all have clear applications before being funded, because that's not how science works.

With that said, the research you have cited may have applications such in making materials that don't deform when cut - which could be useful in all sorts of domains.

It's funny how the pro-EU posters one minute claim that scientific research would collapse overnight if we left the EU, then claim that the EU doesn't have anything to do with bits of scientific research they don't like. Any chance you guys could make up your minds please?

I suggest you take some of your own advice:

Read what I posted again and come back when you've understood it.

They seem to have faith that our politicians will be able to negotiate these amazing deals with the rest of the world due to our economic size....the same politicians they criticise for not being able to stand up and negotiate good deals for us with the EU...

Indeed, it does show a level of arrogance that seems rife with euro skeptics, that we deserve all this special treatment and that we'll get it because we're a world power.

If we left the EU then we'd be free to set whatever tariff we wanted against illegal Chinese steel, and we could hold the government to account if they didn't.

Just like we'll hold them to account for the snooper's charter? We may have the power to set import duties, but we wouldn't, especially with a Conservative administration.

In the real world, your point is completely irrelevant.

Most people outside of this forum think the Snooper's Charter is a good thing. That's fine if the Conservative government don't want to set import tariffs, people can remember that at the next general election and vote for them or not. Who we can't vote for however is the largest parliamentary group in Brussels, the EPP who will likely decide who the next President of the EC is.

Most of the public don't care about cheap chinese steel either. Nothing will change here.
