The Evil Within

Hoping to pick the first game in the Steam Sale tomorrow.

Never played any of these or really looked at any gameplay videos apart from the last few weeks with the new game, is the first one like the second one?

The first one is more linear than the second but it has more of feeling of WTF is going on throughout the game compared to the second that I really liked. I'm about half way through the second one and I'm enjoying it equally as much as the first one. The second one feels a bit more 'straight forward' in terms of the plot which is likely in response to feedback on the first game when people found it hard to follow - personally I thought this was a good thing, similar to the format of Asian cinema where your kept guessing until the end but I guess Westerners are too used to having a simple plot to follow. Anyway, elements missing in the second game compared to the first are offset for me by the exploration and looting in the second game which is really enjoyable. Two excellent games.

Just played to the start of the second chapter. I like the way it trolls you near the start
by making you think you can stealth kill the butcher.

I think this might be the sort of game I'll like. The lighting is good and the gore, while a bit over the top, does add to all the WTF-ery feelings.

But... the performance! Man, the performance! I don't know if this is going to be playable unless I can improve the performance. It constantly devoles into a horrible juddery slide show, usually whenever I enter a new room, or a set piece is about to happen or has just happened. It runs okay between these times (well, once I found I could up it to 60 whole fps - woohoo!), but these juddery periods come around so frequently it's killing the enjoyment for me a bit.

I did hear there were performance problems with this on launch, but I thought/hoped they'd been patched out by now. Any ideas how to stop it juddering so frequently? My PC should be able to handle this, I'd have thought, especially given it's not exactly a new release.

Recently completed this. Graphics are pretty dated and you will die a lot. It started off good but then chapter 2-5 I thought I was going to hate this and it felt like a burden to play it. I was simply trying to get through the game as fast as possible.

But from about chapter 7 - 15 the game vastly improved and I actually enjoyed it so much I bought the second.

Performance tho was horrific. Regular slow downs and hitching. And for a game two + years old these issues should have been fixed.

I don't know if this will work for you on your Nvidia card but I was getting bad slow downs when playing in full screen but ran perfectly in windowed mode. Might be worth a try...

Try this:

Launch game with +vt_pageimagesizevmtr 2048

My goto place before I start any PC game, it may or may not help.

Thanks for the suggestions, guys.

Running the game in windowed mode did improve things a bit (thought it was still a juddery mess in plenty of places, just not as many and not as bad). However, I couldn't get it to run borderless windowed, and windowed mode also seems to bring back the letter-boxing. So it helps with some of the juddering, but I'm still not really happy with playing it this way.

The command line didn't seem to make any difference.

Really disappointed by the performance here. The game is creepy, atmospheric, and brings back the survival horror feel of playing the first couple of Resident Evil games, but it's just horrible to play, unfortunately.

It's a strange one. When I first played the game on my Fury X and at 3440x1440 I got a really solid 57 FPS with no stuttering at all. Then after installing new drivers and going back to the game it was completely broken in fullscreen mode, running at 8FPS and only going back up to 50+ very briefly every 5 seconds or so - this was even in the splash screens and menus at beginning of the game. Going into windowed mode fixed this completely though. This was entirely an AMD driver issue though so it shouldn't be what you're experiencing. Given the 980Ti is a similar level of performance to the Fury X you really shouldn't be having trouble running the game unless there where Nvidia specific issues with it. Could it be your CPU that is struggling and causing your performance issues?

Well, I'm done with it for now. Thanks for the suggestions, peeps, but I've tried them all and others - letterboxing, locking to 30fps, changing graphics settings, tinkering with some suggested settings in Nvidia control panel.

But I was at the bit with the houses and the zombies and it was just horrible. I couldn't move the view around without it skipping, juddering, jerking.

I may come back to it when I upgrade my rig next year to something that should be ridiculously overpowered for its graphics. For now I'm giving Original Sin 2 a whirl.

Are you referring to the first game?

If so, yea performance is dog awful. But I managed to get through the game.

Yeah. The first one.

Just too dogawful for me. As I say I'm sure I'll come back to it one day when I have a better PC (not that this game should need one, but there we are...).

Is the second one better in terms of performance?
The second one is quite demanding, not helped by the fact that it only allows for 80% utilisation of GPUs. I got between 57 and 75 FPS at 3440x1440 with my LC Vega 64 so that is a bit lower than most new games. No issues with stuttering or anything like that. Still think there is something amiss with your performance issues, unless the game favoured AMD cards generally. There is maybe one other thing you could try - there is a flawless widescreen fix for the game that removes the letterboxing and tweaks some other things - it might be worth trying to use it to see if it helps...

Yeah, something is definitely not right. There are plenty of people having performance issues with this game, but most people seem to be able to make it run at least reasonably from what I've read. Maybe something about background processes, I dunno. I liked the start of the game and would like to come back to it. I am planning an upgrade once I see what the Ryzen refresh offers, so I'll probably leave it till then now. Having way too much fun with D:OS2 anyway...

Nah the first game is very very broken. It ran worse than dog poop on my pc. (Only played it last month)

But I persisted with it and played it and actually thought it was a good game.

Yeah, I just can't be doing with it as it's currently performing. I'm sure it is a good game. It certainly seems like it's shaping up to be, but the first really open outdoor area with a few enemies and some fire and it just tanks ridiculously. I can't even aim my pistol due to the view jerking around.

Well I finally completed the main game today after 5 years lol, enjoyed it more today than I did back in 2014, picked up the DLC for a couple of Bob in the steam sale then off to complete number 2 which also been bought back in 2017 :D
