The Evolution of Game Controllers.

I had one of those but used it on my Amiga. There was a few games that actually used 2 buttons on the Amiga.

The ones where the cables connect to the side of the pad were worse :p

Ahh I only used mine on my Master System 2, it was my first console. :D

I used it to play games like this:

Game Gear version but not that much different from MS2 version :D

Ahh I loved my Master System. :(

My god...Ninja. One of the most stressful games in history. You couldnt be hit!! EVER! I remember I got very far, but I don't think i ever finished it. It was an early RAGE enducing game

It was very stressful! Even more so for a kid of 9 or 10 years old. :(

I remember getting to just before the end, where loads of those dogs keep appearing and I just couldn't do it. Way hard.

Donald Duck's Lucky Dime Caper was another game that was insanely difficult for me as well.

I have to say I always advocated the PS2 pad as the best pad out there, bar none, but now I've been using the 360 pad for a while I think I prefer it. Two reasons really, firstly there are decent triggers, which are awesome, and there's also an analogue stick on the left that doesn't give you crazy thumb cramp! It's by no means perfect though. It still feels a bit too big and the d-pad is just awful. Also the round buttons don't have a very good feel to them at all, not compared to the PS2 buttons.

As for using your body, it's not for me. I like the wii every now and again for fun, silly games, but I'm struggling to see how they can deliver a rewarding gameplay experience with serious games that require accurate movements and so on. The pad will be king for a while yet, but this motion detection malarky will open up the market a little more again like the wii did.

I too used to love the PS2 pad but nowadays I can't bare to use it when I've used the 360 pad. Thinking of picking up a PS3 soon too and the controller is really putting me off :(

I was a fan of the N64 controller too thought that was quite easy to use although it was rather pointless having a D pad.

Not a fan of using my body or waving things around, if that's the route that gaming is going then I can't see me playing much longer. Might go back to PC Gaming.

As soon as Xbox Controller S came out I thought of the Dualshock design as dated and hideous.
TBH, I preferred the Dreamcast controller to the Dualshock.

I would say that overall, the Xbox360 pad is better than the PS3 one, I have one plugged into the PC but I have no trouble with the PS3 pads at all. I suppose because the desing has been out for ~15 years and I've always been a gamer that I'm just accustomed to it without really thinking about it.

Go get your head examined, the PS2 pad is archaic compared to the original Xbox or 360 pad.

You do realise that what you prefer may not be what others prefer? Just because you find one thing to be better than another doesn't make that the best. I personally like both, I find the 360 has better triggers and better left stick placement, but then I like the Cross, Triangle, Circle and Square buttons on the PS3 better than I like A,B,X,Y, I also prefer the L1 and R1 to the RB and LB as I find them too clicky for my liking, but then that's just my personal preference.

There's no need to be so arsy in response to other people either!

Same here. The SNES pad was full of win. Especially when SF2 came out:D

SNES pad was ideal for SF2. Remember the 3 button Megadrive pad on Street Fighter? A,B,C was low, med, high punch. You had to press start to change these to low, med, high kick:eek: then start to skip back to punch again. They did bring out a 6-button pad though.

Talking of SNES pads, the worst thing about the xbox360 pad for me is that when I see on-screen prompts for X,B ETC, I still automatically think of the SNES layout :( same buttons but different positions

Mouse and keyboard is the clear winner though, not strictly a 'game' controller however.

The Orignal xbox pad was shocking mate, it was nearly the size of the console and that wasn't small. Once they resized it, it became good

I agree when it comes to the feel of a pad, the buttons, tiggers, it's weight etc, but not about the stick/d-pad placement. Unless your hands are very oddly formed, when you hold a PS2 analogue pad your thumb naturally falls over the d-pad. This makes sense as back then the vast majority of games employed the d-pad over analogue (and for the same reason is why the current Wii classic controller has it's d-pad in the same place). Today very few games use the d-pad and yet the PS3 pad still uses the same design  It makes no sense - all Sony need to do is swap the d-pad/stick placement!

Dodgy analogue stick position aside, the Sixaxis/DS3 triggers are abysmal, your fingers naturally slip down off of them because they are tapered the wrong way. I find them bordering on unusable without a set of 'real triggers' attached.

I've got to say I've found the triggers on the 360 pad have a better kick to them when using them. They just feel and act as triggers should, which is great considering the amount of games that require you to shoot. Ive found the way the ps3 ones go in at an angle when you press them just feels odd. It's by no means unusable but it is uncomfortable at times, think the 360 has got that part sorted.

Also the curved shapes of the 360 one feel more comfortable and just fits in and forms around the shape of my hands when holding it tbh, i find the ps3 pad is very angular in places, if that describes it best. Again by no means awful, just my observations. I don't exactly have the chunkiest pair of hands.
