The Evolution of Game Controllers.

I've more than likely put more hours into the skate series than most on here. All on the ps3, That game has a hell of a lot of analogue action and I've never had any problems.

360 controller will win by miles on here.

I don't mind people saying they prefer the 360 controller.. it's more people saying the ps3 controller is pretty much un-usable, When it clearly isn't.

We should have a 'best video game controller' poll. And see which wins and by how much.

Would be vaguely interesting.

Yeah, no point in having a poll unless we have some closet Playstation fans. We all know how many people want to get their lips around Bill Gates' ring piece on these boards. ;)

Well ok, a poll about video game controllers that omits anything to do with xbox then. :p

Megadrive pads were pretty awesome... At least in the sense that you could beat someone to death with them, and then crush them with a steamroller and they'd still work. :D

The original NES controller had square buttons too, if I remember correctly <- random fact.

I still love the Master System 2 controller. It had sharp edges, how the hell did that pass safety regulations?!?! :o

Heh, the Megadrive ones were awesome too, with that weird curve on either end, you could actually batter someone with those things.

I find the PS controllers the best, with the exception of the sixaxis because the weight of it felt strange.

For me, the 360 pad is just far too big, and the analogue stick is in the wrong place.

But the worst has to be the N64 controller. An analogue stick in totally the wrong place, and the whole thing was made out of the most fragile and tacky plastic known to man.

Question.
How can it be the best with such hideous analogue stick placement?

as opposed to stick placement aimed at people with a massive left thumb or a stumpy right thumb ?

horses for courses

i was going to mention skate actually. because i used to find it way easier on my ps3 than i do on my xbox. dont know if its a sensitivity issue/difference but getting the movements spot on was far easier before in my opinion

i like the PS pad better for everything except racing games , where i prefer xbox

Go get your head examined, the PS2 pad is archaic compared to the original Xbox or 360 pad.

wait you mean the ps2 pad with fully anolog buttons and d pad ? that the 360 pad still doesnt manage ? the d pad feels like a mega drive one and the front buttons are nasty too but luckily arent that important

and yea im a PS pad fanboy because my hands are probably moulded into the shape of it from 15? years use :p

Needs a poll.

BTW if you like the 360 controller then your hands are deformed, if both your hands are the same then PS controller is perfect ;)

sega really fail at pads imo. just look at the saturns analog pad !!! :D mega drive was nasty compared to the snes pad too

No they don't.

The six button pad they designed for the Mega Drive and eventually the Saturn version is for me the best gamepad ever for 2D games and especially fighting games like Street Fighter. Where else do the current FightPad designs come from.

And I liked the Dreamcast pad too. Microsoft owes a lot to them.

The first bit is opinion, but the bit about plastic is just pure wrong!
Those controllers could take a beating and still keep on working!

I personally really liked the controller, the analogue was in a great place!

Not sure about taking an actual beating, but my girlfriend at the time had an N64 and worshipped the thing. Despite treating it like a king the controllers just popped their clogs - mainly the analogue stick or the connection under the analogue "ball" would just fail.

Also any controller where you need to move your whole hand to go from digital to analogue is DOING IT WRONG! :p

Having said that, I know the N64 controller has a quite serious following so i'll notch it down to personal preference. That, or you're all deluded! :p

What do people think of the Dreamcast controller? Personally I loved it! :D

And the memory card was just something else!!!

- Only one analogue stick

- Only two shoulder buttons

- Just a start button (no select).

- Memory cards in the pad instead of the console? wtf?

- Cable connected to the BASE of the pad rather than the top... seriously wtf?

Nah, compared to the 'dual shock' DC pads were a step backwards tbh. I liked my DC but the pads were... bleh.

Not as bad is the N64 pads though. They were HORRIBLE!. :p

You realise you have to hold the pad with left hand on the middle prong, right hand on the right prong to use it, right?

Given that the N64 controller was the first to use an analog stick on a mainstream controller, and made great use of it in many games, I think we can cut Nintendo a little slack for the slightly weird design of it.

And now everyone is using analog sticks...

SNES controller has got to be the best. It set the standard for what controllers use now. Start, select and should buttons. Then again, Nintendo has set the standard for a lot hardware which other consoles use.

Another sony 'hater' here. Sony's analog sticks have always been way too loose for my liking and the positioning doesn't help. I never really liked the 4 shoulder buttons- my reactions with those fingers are too slow.

The Snes controller is probably the most balanced controller that I have used. I assume that some people would have found it to be a bit small but the layout was perfect.

Xbox/Dreamcast/Gamecube all had similar controllers each with their own flaws.

The Wii controller works very well for a lot standard games but an extra, easy to use button wouldn't go astray!
