The F1 2014 season

Thats a shame. It would have been nice to hear/see the new cars early. From what Mercedes is saying about cooling being so critical there could be some engine failures at this first test.

At Jerez in January? If the temperatures are failing there then they're in real trouble for the remainder of the season!

Btw, is anyone else going to Jerez later this month? If so, how are you going and where are you staying? I'm flying in to Seville and then driving down, but I haven't yet booked accommodation.

I'll guarantee the engines won't be running at 100% early on at Jerez. They'll only either let them fail towards the end of a test cycle or they'll intentionally push the boundaries towards the end of a day to learn the limits of specific parameters. They let the cars fail late on in a day anyway, testing among other things true fuel capacity.

While the temperatures are likely to be relatively cool at Jerez, they'll just close up the air intakes and exits to simulate warmer climes.

Engine failures are likely to be a feature of the tests, but I don't think they'll play a major part in the season. Performance might, but we've seen in the past that even a 40bhp disadvantage hasn't been an issue (Renault in 2005/2006) because they make up for it in other areas (in that case apparently efficiency, packaging and smoothness of power delivery). It didn't stop them asking for the power to be equalised, and eventually it was, but when hasn't a competitor pushed the limits both professionally and morally?

Ferrari had failure after failure at Sepang in early 2012 I think it was, but they were still fighting for the drivers title in the final race.

I eagerly await the first scorns when a team is decimated on a straight, as if their engine doesn't blow up and they don't panic, it merely means that they hold an advantage elsewhere.

Not too long now then, excited to see the unveiling and the testing. The coverage of the testing was really good on Sky Sports last year.

Last years coverage was a trial of 3D. They only did a couple of hours a day for the final test.

Regulations state no live video footage of testing. They made an exception last year. Hopefully they can do the same this year, even if just a couple of hours a day again.

the text updates and pictures were good enough for me and the videos on the final test and Ted's notebooks were a welcome bonus. Can't wait.

I read/heard not so long ago that it wasn't an engine failure but something else. Perhaps it's something Brundle said in a race himself? The commentators at the time thought it was a clutch failure.
