The F1 2014 season

I could just about stomach the joker idea as at least then there would be an element of skill involved when you play it rather than the pure luck of which circuit ends the season and suits their car.

Doesn't suit their agenda of creating some fake closeness till the last race of the season though so that wouldn't even be thought of as an idea.

I'd prefer the joker idea too
I kind of hope this double points cause a huge controversy
Maybe make all races double points? :-P

Doubt legality of lotus matters.. Might not make it to first race with a nose if the balifs come round

Has anyone decided whether the Lotus double nose is actually legal?

I presume they woulld be banned from taking to the track even during pre-season testing as soon as they turn up if it turns out to be illegal?

One of the technical directors (can't remember who just now) on Sky last night said he thought it was legal. If if it wasn't, they only have to pass the crash test to go testing.

Yep. Testing isn't competitive so isn't regulated. They just need to pass the crash test, and even that is a recent addition.

Technically P1, 2 and 3 are also free of technical regulations, hence why teams can't protest a cars design until qualifying.

That Caterham really is so very different. I can't help but feel they've made a huge mistake. :o

Charlie is (or was) at Jerez, so assuming he's going to turn up to the other sessions, I'm sure he can pop along, have a look and advise.

I'm sure they've been in communication with him about it already though, seeking clarification.

Their problem is, if they did have to change it, is that it's so different to the other noses, they can't just whack another nose on and get similar results. Newey has already stated that Red Bull intend to test a few nose solutions before Melbourne, but assuming they're all based on roughly the same concept, they should be able to adapt the car to suit - the other teams likewise. The Lotus's nose follows a totally different concept, so any change would presumably require a lot of adjustment elsewhere on the car, and it would all require testing in the wind tunnel. And cost money.

I'd love it if the Caterham solution is the pick of the designs. Kamui for the title. My only worry would be where their the wing mounting will be strong enough.

I dont believe a good nose will result in winning the WDC.
There are so many little things that go into making a quick car and a driver competing for the title.
Even if Caterham did have the fastest car on the grid, for race 1 (depending on the magnitude of their advantage), they'd still struggle to win races consistently, as the big teams will have parts copied within a few races.

2012 (McLaren), showed that even when you have the best car, your drivers can get beaten by other teams/drivers.

You have to have a good car, strong team, fast drivers, competent behind the scenes politicians and lots of luck to go your way, before you can win the title.

On the subject of testing. RBR appear to be having huge reliability problems, which is good news for most fans as it means RBR are likely to be weak in the opening races of the season. In saying all this, I still believe that Vettel is favourite for this year's title. He is just too damn good and IMO no longer needs the fastest car on the grid to win the title.

I wouldn't write them off just yet. IIRC Lotus had similar issues at the first test last year, packing up to go home halfway through the week; and then went on to win the first race of the year.

The difference here is that Red Bulls issues are potentially out of their control to fix.

They have missed first tests before and gone on to win the championship, so it might be fine. But they need Renault to pull their finger out too.

The Lotus solution is very similar to the Mercedes one, just that Merc have hidden their crash structure under a vanity panel.

There's nothing illegal about it, so no idea why you think that.

Like I always say I doubt they said the same in the Ferrari days .
I'm guessing you weren't around for the Ferrari days, because people were saying the exact same then.

Besides from what we have seen/head from the tests RBR problems are almost all down to Renault.
That I don't believe at all. While the Renault engine hasn't proved to be the most reliable so far, Caterham and Torro Rosso have at least been doing installation laps and general config work. RBR are the ones having to cut swathes of bodywork off to cool the damn thing and still getting nowhere.

It was far worse in the Ferrari days. Having them win championships at half-way point is soul destroying for the fans.

In Ted's notebook on Wednesday he talked with the Renault engine specialist who said that the power-unit does have an issue but 'some teams have separate issues related to their implementations' (I don't have the exact words he said, but that was the gist).

Reading between the lines it means that RB are packaging things too tightly I suppose.
