The Falklands thread

The population of the FALKLANDS aren't native. The British put them there. You cannot fill islands with your own citizens and then claim you have consensus from the population. We have no more legitimacy in the South Atlantic then the Turks do in Nortrhern Cyprus. How about home-rule for the Falklands.

Fixed.

Who do you think you are Kevin Keegan or something ?

Neither is the population of Argentina native....they came from Europe. By your logic the Argentines have no more legitimacy over Argentina than we do over the Falklands.....

Iam surprised spain hasn't been vocally in support of argentinas claims considering their own efforts with gibralta although spains actions have been much more peaceful and political and the whole matter dealt with in a much more reasonable way.

Couple of reasons, Argentina is currently ****ing Repsol YPF over (the nationalisation of its Argentinian assets isn't far away) so the Spanish aren't pleased with them, and Spain has a few sovereignty disputes itself with Morrocco (Cueta, Melilla). The inhabitants there consider themselves Spanish, and whilst the Spanish say self determination applies to them but not to Gibraltar or the Falklands, they don't say it too loud.

I keep passing over this thread and reading it as "Vuvuzela Threatens Britain..." :/

10,000 people blowing those on a March in London would be more of a threat to the UK then anything coming from a South American banana republic. The only threat that any of them possess is hot air.

I wouldn't be so sure, I don't think it's a good diea to establish negative political relations with Brazil (which is an economic powerhouse at present - on the up and up).

They're certainly getting there but GDP per head is low and still have massive social issues to overcome but they have been up and coming for a long long time. There's even a large population of Chinese / Japanese in Brazil because it was viewed to be the new economic power house 40 years ago :p

But I agree and that's why there were some trade missions, sorry aid donations not so long back

Brazil is a country of extremes. There is a lot of poverty but also some serious wealth.

The strength of their currency against the pound has effective doubled in 5 years

Indeed, you can see why the Chinese want to keep theirs artificially low. Brazil is going to have a harder time compared to Russia and China with their democratic government having to pander to the rich and poor and compete on the world stage.

It's very simple in Brazil, 85% of the population are living in poverty (UN guidelines) 15% are considered to be "rich"

Also 85% of the country's wealth is held by 15% of the population.

And to think that Brazil has the 5 largest "Energy company" in the world (state owned).

They have an interest in The Falklands, albeit very little because of the possibility of oil, but Brazil hate Argentina as much as anyone else...
