Don't think £300 is that much for a good quality winter coat?

It depends what your idea of good quality is and the materials that you want. For a pure wool coat then £300 can be an average price to pay for a decent example (£600 is in the realms of Calvin Klein luxury coats), but you can still get them cheaper in the sales.

I like those quilted jackets, but I think I only like them because they are fashionable at the moment. I need some new stuff for winter.

I might actually buy pyjamas. I think I'm officially old!

Why should a shirt cost 3x the price of a T-Shirt? They both have very similar material costs.

No they don't, shirts are thicker and have quite a bit more material, and shirts are also about 10x more complex to create in terms of tailoring. T-shirts are simple in comparison!

"never look good".

:/

And if you hate "those awful mods", you're going for the wrong type of image/shoe.

You mean boxing boots?

Look for that image of Paul Weller in irrc loafers and highwaters with plastic mods in parkas looking away. There was nothing cool about mod in the 80s it was just a buzzword for parkas, plastic trousers and scooters they were a revolting sight.

Either bleached/acid wash skinny jeans/black jeans/dark jeans (any jean! :p) with turn-ups. The socks will also be a key piece as they will be on show...so this will depend on the rest of your outfit.

If you had a dark red flannel shirt for instance and acid jeans, white socks would be good.

Socks can obviously vary but that's just my advice and what i have seen people around work wearing.

As for tops, something plain and not too bold...a shirt ideally.

Always black socks, less is more.

None of my shirts are thicker than my T-shirts, I'm guessing it depends on what you buy though. I generally only buy surf/ski/climbing type brands not those badly fitting things from H&M and Topman. Shirts are a little more complex to tailor but not that much.

Either way I am willing to spend more money on a shirt (most of mine appear to be around £70+ now) than a T-shirt (max around £25) but that doesn't mean there is any reason they should be more expensive, except willingness to pay more because I've bought expensive branded shirts and not T-shirts.

What annoys me with both shirts and to a lesser extent T-shirts is that you have to pay a lot more to get decent fitting shirts.

Speaking of coats I bought this one a while back from my local Gtar outlet for 70% off rrp:

Gstar New CL Coat Wool Black: http://www.ssense.com/men/product/g_star/new_cl_coat/28244

No hoitlinking images please.

This is the best looking business jacket i've ever bought, the irony being that these photos (the only ones I could find of it after a 10 minute Google search!) make it look absolutely formless. The cut is clean, sharp and very modern, i've been asked about it a few times and I haven't seen anyone else in one where I live. It's worth noting that I always wear it with the collar up though which looks much better! Tempted to take a pic next time I wear it to show you what i mean.

Would be interested to see as I'm looking for some new outerwear.

I have a big ol' draughty Victorian house - its chilly alright!

Still no excuse, my house is very old and occasionally quite rickety. That's why I have big-ass radiators all over and a wood burner in the living room.

Even if the heating failed in the deepest depths of a northern winter, pyjamas aren't even a consideration :p

Yup, when it's really cold I'll stretch to a pair of shorts and a vest top or t-shirt.

It's probably just me and I have no idea why but the thought of an adult man in pyjamas creeps me out a bit
