The Fashion Thread... personal tastes, musings, and recommendations

Quick question about sizes. Is every manufacturer different or is there a standard sizing guide? I am trying to buy a few hoodies and t-shirts online and I cant work out whether to go for L or XL, Some size guides say L is 40" chest and some sites say 42", for the same make of hoodie (firetrap). I'm leaning toward XL as my chest is 42" and I have wide shoulders, so dont want to end up with it being too tight.

Sorry if this isn't the place to ask, just thought someone here might know.

Why would a fashion thread not be the place to ask about clothing sizing... common sense, surely? :)

The answer is that while there is of a standard and universal sizing model for different types of clothing, each manufacturer often interprets it differently, with an M in one brand being an L in another and vice versa. The only real way to be sure is trying something on, or if you are buying blind then just order a couple of sizes and return one of them when you find which fits.

By the way this is the Tommy Hilfiger "Tailored Collection Vintage Peacoat" I bought in the UK. I've never seen one like it before and still never do on the streets. Beautiful colour and fit.

I also bought the Tommy Hilfiger "New Bobby TT Check" blazer with removable body warmer which I really like (mine s bluc check but the photo is of plain version and the photo isn't very good) as a very smart mild to cool weather jacket:

Its all about these tbh:

Seriously though, Gazelle OG are my favorite adidas originals I think.

I tried a pair on but the heel arch is very high, it felt uncomfortable. In fact I think Adidas trainers in general are weirdly shaped compared to just about any other brand I can think of. I take a UK 11 in them (11.5 in the Chile 62's) and I am usually spot on a Size 10.

40"

I measure 40.5".

Though, I've seen this which looks very similar.

This is similar, albeit at full price http://www.asos.com/asos/asos-slim-...talstyles=3&gridsize=3&gridrow=1&gridcolumn=1

I did post links to all of these at sale price ages ago when they had tons of sizes in stock, shame as now as they may not be produced again. I had a similar problem when trying to find this Harris Tweed pea coat which I was mildly obsessed with trying to get hold of: http://www.asos.com/ASOS/ASOS-Harris-Tweed-Peacoat/Prod/pgeproduct.aspx?iid=3137942

That does look nice. Not sure what will pair nicer with jeans though.

That or Nexts offerings. (http://www.next.co.uk/x57442s1).

I doubt they will, there blazers are quite limited now sadly.

I tried a couple of Next blazers and returned them as the built-in shoulder pads they add to them were too thick, and so thus looked blocky and horrendously outdated. Ugh.

The ASOS ones in comparison don't have that and look incredibly form-fitting.

Morning all.

Currently looking at a suit for a wedding and eyeing up something like this (large photo in spoilers)

image1xxl.jpg

Only problem is I'm at limbo as to what colour tie to go with it. Suggestions? I'm not sure if navy/blue goes with it...

A shawl-collared, light blue suit? Eek... hope it's not a smart of formal affair!

Top half doesn't look much better if you ask me. Look at the sleeves, far too short.

Funnily enough all this talk of slim fitting stuff is the reason I'm posting. At the moment I'm really struggling to find either shirts or trousers for work which don't have the cursed 'slim fit' style. Living in the middle of nowhere means that my usual haunts are either TK Maxx (shop and online) or Next shop in Dundee (online stuff still registered at my old address and can't change that unless i phone them!!!! how backwards)

Any other places i should be trying for regular fit clothing? 16.5inch collar and 36L trousers are what I'm looking for.

Cheers :)

Slim fit stuff is fine if you are actually slim and in proportion, then it is very flattering with no excess bagginess. If you aren't, then it just look s daft.

Guys, go check out TK Maxx asap. I picked up a navy blue Oliver Spencer military jacket pallas midnight, pure new wool, for £50. Yes, fifty nicker. RRP over £300 Selling at £175 online now in sales. Immaculately tailored, very sharp, and just oozes class and quality. Oh yeah, and made in the UK. It is beyond a bargain.

Link to same jacket online http://www.aphrodite1994.com/oliver-spencer-military-jacket-midnight

I also got a Ralph Lauren cable knit jumper for £50, usual price online £100-£120.

There are some nuggets of gold for people willing to sift through the mud to get them. :)

l bought a ted baker 'alaska' coat from house of Fraser on Boxing Day but noticed it had a small hole from someone ripping the tag off of the arm so returned it:( no more in stock in my size anywhere that I can find. It was a beautifully soft cashmere blend too, quite sad actually!

Some of the tags they put on jackets drive my completely nuts... they really risk ruining the fabric!

Can anyone recommend some decent brands of winter coats? Originally I was looking at North Face before I realised every chav and his brother has one.

Looking for something warm that will last years. £200-300

Define winter coat... just for UK weather? And what is your budget? North Face are a reputable brand and make decent stuff, I have a North Face McMurdo down jacket and love it.

I'm in need of a suit for tomorrow, last minute changes means I now require one for the party  any recommendations on where to get a well fitted, good quality one? I don't mind on cost as long as it's not extortionate.

If you only need a suit for tomorrow, is it really worth spending money on a good quality one? In the dark and with alcohol no-one will notice if it's a Next suit with synthetic materials.
