The Fashion Thread... personal tastes, musings, and recommendations

It's probably fair to say I have expensive tastes (ultra prosumer) but I never see the appeal of buying really expensive shoes, especially for work. Most of the time you are sat down and providing they are clean and get the occasional polish nobody cares anyway. Depends on the job I suppose... although I dread the thought of some sort of job where shoes are prestigious

I never pay more than 100 quid for formal shoes. There are a lot of great looking and comfortable formal shoes with leather (often hand made) soles for that money so I've never seen the point in spending more.

Guys, House of Fraser are having a 50% off sale and most of of their Linea merino wool V-neck jumpers are going for a measly £15 https://www.houseoffraser.co.uk/men...2.201.0023149.0033001.0065044.21.pl#brand-yes

I have about 15 of these V-neck jumpers in various colours and they are great fitting and a super fine merino knit that doesn't make you overheat. Essential smart casual wear for Autumn/Winter with a t-shirt underneath.

Buy as many as you can in the colours you like, because at this price it's worth having a spare or two of your favourite colours. The black and darker shades of blue and indigo especially. :)

Nice shoes but where are those trousers/chinos from? They appear good quality and exactly the colour I'm after!

I just bought a few pairs of NEXT Smart Beted Chinos with zip fly and can highly recommend them, great fit and material http://www.next.co.uk/men/jeans-trousers-shorts/casual-trousers-shorts/5

Throw away the belt though they are crap.

I decided last night that i need to spice up my suit collection!

I have worn suits in my last few jobs and have come to the realisation that after purchasing the first few, i settled on the same style of suit and cut for a three piece or two piece and ended up accumulating several of each in different colours. While there is a variation in colours, the style of the suits are all too similar (slim-ish modern notch lapels, cut in slightly at the waist, single breasted and cut in at the waist jacket, low rise trousers that are slim fitting). I currently have the following colours: black, OCuk lighter background blue, navy blue, charcoal grey, stone grey and light grey.

This new suit wont be massively different but seeing as it will be my newest one, i will save it for client meetings and nicer evening events, rather than the every day office grind that my current suits are used for.

I am short-ish and though of normal build. This is what i was thinking:

-Subtle pinstripe on either navy or charcoal
-Jacket to keep relatively a modern notch lapel style, cut inward at the waist slightly. Single breasted
-Waistcoat to be of classic shape. Single breasted
-Slim but not skinny mid rise trousers instead of ones that hang off the hip. No belt loops as I think mid rise trousers would look better with button braces, especially with a waistcoat

Was also thinking of getting dress shirts for it with the sleeves a bit on the long side and wearing thin metal shirt armbands.

The idea is that subtle slim pinstripes and mid-rise trousers would suit my shorter build. Am wrong in this?

I don't really do double breasted as i cant help but feel they are a bit on the old school side of things and dont mix with slim lapels or slim cut suit, am i wrong OCuk fashion gurus? I am open minded to buying more flamboyant, as long as a continue to look professional.

I have always stood by the rule that a cheap suit that fits well will always look better than an expensive one that doesn't cut the figure. Normally I buy a suit close to my sizes off the shelf and have it taken in and adjusted but i think i'll be out of luck due to anything other than low rise trousers being a rare thing these days outside of black tie suits. Any recommendations on where i can go near me apart from the obligatory Savile Row?

As i said, i have no issue with off the shelf if it almost fits me and having it adjusted.

What do you think OCuk fashion gurus?
Have you thought about getting a tailor made one from a well known suit maker? http://www.asuitthatfits.com/shop/index.php :)

With (hopefully) a few interviews coming up, I thought it best to add some toe-cap Oxfords to my rotation. I was going to just get another pair of Barkers, but saw these at a great price so thought I'd try them on.

Despite the stories about Churchs being not a patch on the pre-prada days, they are incredible quality and were supremely comfortable the second I put them on. The uncorrected calf leather is extremely soft, they really feel like a step up from the couple of pairs of Barkers that I have! I suppose the proof will be in how they wear.
Make sure you get the soles ru
Not really any different from other leather soles :) Very comfortable but not as hard wearing i imagine. When these wear down I'll get them replaced with Dainite. My Barker semi brogue toe caps are Dainite and it's fantastic.
The first thing I do when I buy shoes with leather soles is get a rubber sole put on them at the cobblers... you are just ruining them otherwise and they are slippy as hell in cold weather.

Aren’t you ‘ruining’ a consumable part?
I'm more bothered about not slipping and breaking the non-consumable part that is my neck than potentially ruining a consumable part of a shoe...

You can get rubber put onto leather multiple times and I have never had a problem with it. :)

Guys does anyone know any good places to get Converse shoes? I am specifically looking for Chuck Taylor All Star Hi designs in leather (and only leather) and size 10 but it seems that they are like hens teeth in Europe. :(

SO I'm in the process of buying some Gregory Peck sunnies, I'll be getting them with a prescription as I'm hard of seeing but my question is: polarised or nah?

I'm not sure I'll get the benefit from them most of the time, they'll cost an extra £50, they might not allow me to use my phone with them on.

So, thoughts?
Polarised are amazing if you are frequently around water (sailing, fishing etc) or in the mountains in Summer. If not, then it's probably not so practical. Personally, I always buy them as it is easier on my eyes. Also, AMOLED phones seem fine with them on.

In other fashion news, I've been trying to find some 'court' style trainers for ages, considered stan smiths and am still considering them. It seems like they all fit strangely (meaning a 12 doesn't fit me with any of them even though I'm usually a 12!) so I've gone up to a 13 :( Think I'll go with stan smiths but I can't quite make my mind up!

One thing I have learnt in life is only buy shoes that fit as perfectly as possible. Any doubts or discomfort, don't do it.

Anyone got recommendations for male black jeans, straight leg - ideally something with subtle weathering/distressed type look - hard finding something that isn't solid black, actually faded grey or over the top distressed, etc. unfortunately my go to ones are no longer made.
Budget? My go-to for all jeans now is Levi as they are just so durable and seem to last me ages as well as fit like a glove.

Within reason I'll pay whatever if they are what I want. I generally spend around £100-200 on jeans.

I've kind of gone off Levi - there is a huge difference in quality and durability depending on which factory they come from unfortunately.
I got my Levis in USA and Japan so maybe the quality is different there, but so far they are bulletproof and I have enough pairs to last years. In fact, only one pair of Levis that I have ever bought has failed me and that was due to doing almost everything in this one particular pair. :)

I forgot about this thread. Can anyone recommend some good quality t-shirts for less than £20? I love Uniqlo supima cotton ones but they only come plain colours. Their print t-shirts aren't quite the same material.
I really love Jack & Jones tshirts... good quality cotton, reasonable price, and generally a very good fit for slim guys of average proportions. Mine usually last ages until I destroy them. :D

Superdry, love them or hate them (luckily in my country they don't have a chav reputation because there are no chavs :D), are finally, since I last looked at them anyway, starting to release some very sharp looking and well fitting stuff that do not look gimmicky and actually have enough space under the armpits to be practical and allow some mild layering. I just bought the following cotton jackets:

1. Rookie Classic Pocket Jacket in green (thinner, more of a spring/autumn jacket) https://www.superdry.com/mens/jackets/details/150901/rookie-classic-pocket-jacket-khaki

2. Classic Rookie Pocket Jacket in black (thicker and padded with fleece lining) https://www.superdry.com/mens/jackets/details/156109/classic-rookie-pocket-jacket--black

3. I also bought a Rookie Military jacket in black which has a very muted design with no orange bits but it's no longer on the site so must have sold out.

There is also a Rookie Military Jacket in green that looks very cool and understated https://www.superdry.com/mens/jackets/details/73560/rookie-military-jacket-green

For jackets 1 and 2, when I received them I immediately took a dark green and a black permanent marker pen and went over the bright orange detailing-stitching on the jackets (but not the arm flag label) with the relevant colour. This had the desired effect of almost completely muting the bright orange to the point where you barely even notice it. Job done.

  • Jacket 1 looks insanely cool and fits like a glove with enough room for a jumper and looks perfect with any colour jeans and trainers. I will be wearing it a lot.
  • Jacket 2 fits well but is twice as thick so I will save it for Winter.
  • Jacket 3 I have yet to receive but looks like something inbetween jacket 1 and 2 in terms of thickness while still being sharp and slim fitting.

Clearly as they are cotton they are not going to be waterproof or even water resistant so I will also get some wax spray and give them a good once over to add some water resistance. Something like this https://www.amazon.co.uk/Nikwax-Uni...GZB78N&refRID=KV1CXH7WXJWJPMGZB78N&th=1&psc=1

Very happy with them so far in terms of look and fit and they seem well put together so should last ages. :)

Oh man I have fallen down a rabbit hole with mens Boots. After buying Tommy for the last few years I bought a pair of handmade Italian boots, brogue wingtips in dark tan, in a local sale and I am smitten with how they look. I am now doing research and am now looking at options from Carmina who even have custom boot options for around £450 https://www.carminashoemaker.com/mens-boots?page=1&perPage=999999&orderBy=priority,name&orderByDirection=ASC&view=1&SEARCHCRITERIA=&CATEGORIESLIST=&FILTEROPTION=&ONLYSALES=0&SEARCHTYPE=4&ONLYHIGHLIGHTS=0&BRANDSLIST=&TOPRICE=0&FILTERCUSTOMTAG=&FROMPRICE=0&INCLUDESUBCATEGORIES=2&CUSTOMTAGSSEARCHLIST=

They are not cheap, but look like they will last many years vs my off the shelf ones that usually last 1-2 years...

Guys I'm after a really good quality Parka.

My current coat lineup consists of :

Waterproof/hiking : Patagonia Torrentshell 3L Jacket
Warm coat : Patagonia Jackson Glacier Jacket
Smart coat : Navy Wool coat

I'm after something a little longer than the Jackson Glacier (hence Parka) but really warm like that one mainly for winter.

I like the look of the Patagonia Tres 3-in-1 (https://eu.patagonia.com/gb/en/prod...388_color=NORG&cgid=mens-jackets-vests-casual) but wondered if theres anything else worth taking a look at? I see Arc'teryx get some love online but never actually seen one

Criteria :
  • Not Canada Goose or North Face
  • No big logos
  • Good technical
  • Black
  • No fur/faux fur
  • On the smarter side (i.e not with 18 pockets)
I think you need to state a budget. Generally the Scandinavian brands are very good (and nit too common in the UK), with Helly Hansen, Fjallraven and Haglöfs etc being solid options.
