The "fast" lane...

To overtake drivers who are seriously slow or to get past a vehicle I don't like (for example a mk. 1 Espace full of little kids where they may be distracting the driver.)
 
I overtake in it.

I often find myself stuck in the middle lane, people in the inside lane are going too slowly and my car doesn't quite have the grunt to pop into the outside lane quickly..
 
I sit in whatever lane I need to, to carry on at 70mph, I think I have good lane discipline and use them purely for overtaking, I really get irritated though when there is someone chugging along in the fast lane at like 50mph and all the inside lanes are clear....but usually when they see me approaching they move :p

I tend to stay in the "fast" lane as I'm usually constantly over-taking :p

If it's quiet then I'll drift over, and obviously if something comes steaming up my backside I'll move over pronto. But I generally tend to stay there as there's always cars infront of me. :)

EDIT - Oh if some bell doesn't move over when the middle-lane is clear then year they get the old flashing treatment (or fogs if it's dark). Failing that I'll undertake (if safe(ish!) :p)

In the car, I'm quite a sedate driver on the M-way.

On the bike though, I wait for a reasonable amount of time and if "Johhny-Tin-box" doesn't move over when its plainly obvious he could do so if he really wanted to, a quick flick of the wrist and I undertake.

I know I shouldn't, but what the hell.

It's even more interesting when the aformentioned mobile chicane driver finally finds his accelerator pedal after an undertake and attempts to keep up with you. :p
 
Obviously as most I just use it to overtake, however I'm not a big fan of the lane because you get sooooooo many white vans in the middle lane who try and undertake you ( by moving to about an inch of the car infront of them in the middle lane). It gets annoying after a while, I get sick of having to speed up to stop them moving into a meter or two gap infront of me by undertaking me, then slamming breaks on when they get in fast lane.

I think you will find it's exclusively for Merc Sprinter Vans, Nailed old Mondeo/Vectra's and BMW's...

I use the left lane mostly but if some HGV insists on using the middle lane to overtake another HGV going the 2mph slower than him i have to venture into the fast lane, also if im bored i use the fast lane for well fast driving i.e 100+
