The First Album You Bought

For tapes it was Now that's what I call music some number. Probably 13-14 years old.
For CDs, Michael Jackson: History. Probably 16-17 years old.

Might be an idea to say which year and how old you were as well?

Soul II Soul - vol. one (Club Classics, which was Soul II Soul's 1st album.

1989. I was 11.

Edit: forgot to say it was on cassette.

I was 6 when I got Crossroads from the local music shop in 1995.

It's now a Thai restaurant. All the music shops have essentially closed down in Bristol. It was a massive hit when Chemical Records closed down for good. That place was like Mecca for anyone who enjoyed mixing.

Was that by Bones Thugs 'n' Harmony? 1995 would fit it about right.

That's not too bad it becoming a Thai restaurant. At least it's not one of the millions of bookies / vaping / phone repairs type places!

If memory serves, the Soul II Soul tape was about £6 from WHSmiths, which was a month's (4 x £1.50) worth of pocket money.

Although it doesn't fit this thread as I didn't buy it, Michael Jackson's "Dangerous" was my 1st CD. My dad said to me and my sister that if we did well in our school exams in 1992, he'd buy us our 1st CD each. So we both did well and I chose the Michael Jackson album and my sister chose the Simply Red "Stars" album.

My 1st single was Mr Blobby, in 1993. I should have known better at age 15 :p Then again, there was a bit of teenage rivalry between me and my sister. She was going through a Take That phase and Mr Blobby had just got to no.1 in early December 1993. Take That then knocked Blobby off the top. Sister hoped that Take That would stay at no.1 and take the Christmas no.1 spot. I was hoping Blobby would go back to the top just to annoy her and he did!

It was 1970, I was in a record shop and my mate looked at a 50p album on the wall and said the bloke on the cover looked exactly like me so I bought it.
It was about 6 months later when I got to listen to it because nobody had a record player, my Dad used reel to reel (ask your Grandad).
I had a Mono Dansette for Christmas and played my first album - T.Rex by T.Rex.
My second album was T.Rex - Electric Warrior.

As far as I'm concerned my first album purchase was on CD. I did buy vinyl albums prior to that but once I started buying CD's I began to replace what vinyl albums with CD's because I sold my turntable when I bought a CD player. Well hindsight is a wonderful thing, If I had kept said Vinyl albums they would have been worth than what I paid for them  I thought I knew better back then in my late teens/early 20's. Needless to say I cant remember what I bought on vinyl because they are gone and it was with pocket money which isn't money I earned at the end of the day.
Said first CD album purchase was 'Phil Collins- Face Value' Bought way back in 1985, I still have it & it still plays almost 40 years later. So much for 'Disc rot' :p

Probably Brothers in Arms - Dire Straits on the wonderful new invention - CD. 1985.

Funnily enough - my one and only Dire Straits album.

Was a long long time ago but the first single i bought was Holidays in the Sun by the Sex Pistols so i think i would have bought the LP as well.

My first best LP though was Telekon by Gary Numan.

Michael Jackson - Dangerous, I think though that was via my parents.

One I actually bought myself was probably Fat Boy Slim - You’ve Come a Long Way Baby or Manic Street Preachers - Everything Must Go. I didn’t really get into music properly until late, hence the few years gap.

hmm, possibly Iron Maiden Live After Death, or some other random metal but I had quiet a wide range - from Slayer to Chris Rea, Def Leopard Hysteria to Dire Straights Money For Nothing. Helped my dad was into rock (status quo etc) and so my tapes ended up being played in the car when we went off fishing etc.

I've gone into deep memory retrieval after buying a new car stereo last week, this one had bluetooth which now enables me to listen to an old comedy radio show back in the 50's via BBC sounds, The Goon Show. This triggered my memory of what I 1st bought when I was 16, it was a Goon Show Classics Album from a Record Shop in Cambridge, where my nan lived at the time. I then preceded to buy every Goon show record I could lay my hands on.
