The first "proper" Kepler news Fri 17th Feb?

That doesn't make much sense, the GK104 architecture should show very strong tessellation performance - even better than Fermi.

Well from what we've been lead to believe, GTX680 shouldn't be slower than the 7970 at all. Lots of people are going to be disappointed me thinks.

Whether they call it a GTX 680 or a 660 or whatever else, it's a GK104 -- i.e. mid-range. So I wouldn't be surprised if it was a little slower than the 7970. In fact, I've only ever expected circa GTX 580 from mid-range Kepler.

I was concerned Nvidia would pull this stunt, rename the 660/670 to 680 as they can see Kepler easily beats the 7970, charge 680 prices then launch the proper high end part q3 and call it 685

I would also imagine that with a paper launch of 12th March and a product-on-the-shelves launch of later in the month, all the actual chips needed are already with AIB's and being assembled in to cards - in fact to have product on the shelves within this month the cards would need to be on the sea already anyway, so yeah a line updgrade seems the most likely rather than fixing something that's broken

Yes, I would think all these chips are made in batches and will be weeks if not months before they get fitted to a card.
I think the finished cards get to the shops within a week though, but regardless I would think scheduling everything is super complex especially when there are problems in the chain ;)

They won't call their mid-range card GTX680.

It really does seem that all semiconductor foundries other than intel's own are completely incompetant.
If the article is to be believed nobody is having problems with TSMC's 28nm process apart from nVidia; this wouldn't be the first time that they've used TSMC as a scapegoat, I remember them doing the same with NV30 and Fermi.

I would expect them to name it the 780, 685 doesn't sound like a big enough upgrade for the hefty price premium they are sure to charge.

Seems a bit odd - they've definitely been using the 680 moniker in relation to upcoming stuff in March-April but theres plenty of credible people saying we won't see the GTX580 replacement until around July or so... I hope they don't do an AMD with the 6870.

It does seem odd. GTX 280 high end part. GTX 480 high end part. GTX 580 high end part.

Can't see them changing it all of a sudden unless they are trying to make it look and sound like a high end part so they can charge loads of money for it.

Im sure it will bring big gains in physx enabled games, and should be a fair bit cooler and hopefully overclockable. The silence from nvidia doesnt bring great enthusiasm from me though.

If the 680 is not the high end card like it's predecessors (480/580) I feel this strategy would be bad for the consumers.

I would expect the 680 to be the top end of the gpu's not middle.

Yeah agree with this, can't believe nvidia wont release anything to rival the 7970 until the end of 2012.
Looks like I will be keeping my trusty 580 until 2013.
