The first "proper" Kepler news Fri 17th Feb?

Oh really? I must have missed that. I was still under the impression it would be 800 odd.

Perhaps with less bandwidth it won't be so competitive at higher resolutions?

I've seen everything there is to see in regards to presentations etc. My stock arrives beginning of next week, more than enough to go round too. :)

However I can't say anything that breaches NDA.

can you tell us what the stock will look like? ... companies - types of coolers on these? (sorry if its already been discussed) ... will it be the default cooler (8800gts) or some dual headed fan beast? ...

1004 with a turbo to 1080 or something like that. Couple of pages back IIRC.

It was apparently (according to myth) supposed to be clocked at 700mhz and be called a 670ti. But then a couple of things came to light.

Firstly a bios with a stupid name that gave the card 40% more performance.

Then a Jackanory tell us a story that 670ti was a smoke screen and Nvidia were hiding their true intentions all the way along and never intended to release a 670ti.

It can be interpreted in many ways I guess. Personally I think that they simply sat down and overclocked it and realised they could make it go fast enough to call it a 680.

In other words Kepler has basically unfolded in front of our eyes, and the only thing that is clear is that Nvidia have basically been playing the guessing game as to what it is capable of since they actually had it in their hands and got a chance to actually sit down and play with it.

The whole thing just smacks of Fermi without the broken rumours.

He can't tell you anything more. I've been under NDA and tbh I chose to say nothing. Mostly because if you do say something, anything, then people begin to hound you for more information.

As for the aftermarket coolers on launch? I highly doubt it.

Just take a look back at Nvidia's launch history.

There you go. Oddly the Hexus link to it takes you to a page that has been removed.. Nvidia telling people off?

Guys after so many year of being fooled around you learned nothing ??
Rumours will be true they always are nowadays. Its just people that cant see disappointing product going on sale.
Its same story like bulldozer cpus.
If product is kinda ****** and producer is not to happy with it then he does not give any proper news/specs about hes product. To stop people from buying product from hes competition.
Then it comes out and its disappointing in some way. People buy AMD cards.
This is how I see this 680. If its oc performance is lower then 79xx and its on same price range. Who will buy it ??

Do you think that if 680 would own 79xx cards hard NV would keep it a secret ?? Its bad for sales later on.

Can you tell us what brands you are likely to have in stock for launch?

EVGA, Gigabyte, Asus, Palit, MSI, Gainward, Zotac etc?

With the way it is looking, both cards could be neck and neck on performance. Not a bad thing and they both will play the latest games "For now".

Forget that, not any of us on this forum (except Gibbo grrrrrrrrr) know anything about this 680, as Nvidia have only released a name. Untill we see release specs from Nvidia or a person who does not give two hoots about NDA, we will just have to wait.

Personally, I am folding my arms in a huff. I am fed up now. We still having nothing in black and white.

Does anyone esle think the boost clock is laughable?

I mean what can 52mhz more do when the card is already clocked at over 1Ghz.

It makes it look like the overclock headroom for this card is near to nothing.

Hoping I'm wrong though.

Looks like gibbo is getting ready for a friday/monday release. :)

Ok, regarding transistor densities, I have a few questions:

A comparatively lower transistor density in the 7970 explains why AMD has had better yields and could get to market months ahead of Kepler, right?

Does this also explain why the 7970 can overclock so well, and in comparison why we shouldn't expect Kepler to proportionately overclock as much, right?

Not saying it's a bad chip, it could end up thrashing the 7970 for all we know.

Yes indeed, and this is what makes it all look like fail.

/assumption mode...

I would assume that they never intended to run Kepler at those clocks. I also assume that the 700mhz clock was true, but then they got to see Tahiti.

Scrambling with their technology they spent the last two months trying to make it perform as closely to or slightly better than Tahiti.

But, more worryingly if they haven't beaten Tahiti then Kepler = fail. Total fail.

Why? because they have had time to sit down and fiddle with things and put Kepler into a clear lead. If they haven't ? then the fact is they can't.

And can't = fail.

The whole "wafer shortage thing" could simply be Nvidia being punched to the ground by AMD and then saying "wait, no wait, NO WAIT" before getting up and throwing back a feeble punch.

Kepler needs a damn good lead if it is to be successful. It needs a lead that leaves AMD incapable of jiggling Tahiti and coming back with a faster card.

And all signs currently point to no.
