The GTX 980 Ti owners thread.

Can you explain. So potentially adding +87 could be bad and cause a crash? What's the limiter you refer to?

I'm on an MSI gaming.

Speed + voltage each of them cost power. For example On stock you might get 1400 with power limit 110%, but when you add voltage you run out of juice, so it won't work. I would first try to check oc on stock volts with max power limit until you fail benchmark then add some volts to check if it changes anything.

So who's kind enough to provide a run down on how to tweak the bios so that the card ignores temp and thus stops throttling?

It wont be temp it'll be power
I've downloaded the bios and it has a 275W limit as standard and 300W when you raise it all the way, yet its supposed to be rated at 375W with 2x8-pin plus the pcie slot

it takes a bit of getting your head round but this is the guide most people point you to.

http://www.overclock.net/t/1522651/disable-boost-and-bake-in-max-game-stable-clocks-for-maxwell

Just look at the voltage steps if you dont want to disable boost. Also note the temp target on the common tab.

Cheers for that. Hilbert has set the power limit to 120% in Afterburner:

I wonder how he's doing that since mine can't go any higher than 109%.

To get on the Roll of Honour all you have to do is post a pic with your user name on it of your 980 Ti.

Cheers for that. Hilbert has set the power limit to 120% in Afterburner:
http://www.guru3d.com/articles_pages/msi_geforce_gtx_980_ti_gaming_oc_review,35.html

I wonder how he's doing that since mine can't go any higher than 109%.

When you edit the maximum power it adjusts the % for you as well, so if you keep the 275W default and then adjust the maximum to say 350W it would then let you set 130% in AB

If you look in AB, at the bottom of the monitoring options there are four "limit" options which are 0 or 1, when one of them flags a 1 it shows you which limit you are hitting

Here is my precious and some basic OC.

Anyone got a basic GPU overclocking guide? CPU was easy enough but have no idea when it comes to GPU :p

Simples:

MSI After burner or Precision X you need.

Voltage: +87mv
Fan speed: 100%
Power target: Maximum
Temp target: Maximum (95c)
Core: +100, then go up in 10MHz increments
RAM: +300, then go up in 100MHz increments.

With the above most 980Ti should hit 1450-1550MHz core, 7600-8400MHz memory with temperatures between 55c-75c depending on cooler and ambient temperatures.

The above is for benching purposes ONLY!

For Gaming I'd recommend:

Voltage: +0mv or +25mv
Fan Speed: 50-70% depending on card.
Power Target: Maximum
Temp Target: 85c
Core: +100
RAM: +300

Good for at least a good 10-20% bump in performance in FPS. :)

I'm on custom water and those are the gaming settings I'm running. The 980Ti is a powerful card and I don't see any point pumping more heat into my loop that required.

GPU overclocking is way easier than cpu, just a few things to tweak (unless you start modifying the bios).

Until yesterday I thought that bumping up the voltage to +87 was always a good thing, for my card I've got most benefits @+20 (stable 1480Mhz). Higher voltage hits the power limit.

Ace, cheers for that Gibbo ;)

Yeah, as has already been said, avoid just jumping straight to +87 as you'll just hit the power limit sooner, best off finding your maximum stable clocks on stock volts and then bump it up 10-20 at a time, same with memory, find your max core OC first before playing with VRAM speeds as again these 980ti's hit the power limits quite quickly and core OC seems to give better results in games than memory OC

if your benching for benching's sake then 3dmark etc. seems to like memory OC more than core

overclocking while running heaven in the background (windowed) will let you get quick feed back on clocks being stable as you can adjust them on the fly and see instant results, but don't be surprised if heaven stable results are not stable in something more GPU intensive like 3dmark or actual games

got the G1 installed yesterday and when playing games there is a strange audible noise. no idea what coil whine is so dont know if its that, any ideas? its pretty annoying to be honest
