This may be true next year when Pascal is available.
As a 980Ti owner, I see this as a good thing. It means I will be able to get 980Ti SLI for very cheap... But maybe that's just me.
4k gaming is amazing and I do not regret my decision at all.

Thank you to the guys that told me to go for this card over the other custom GTX 980 Ti's.
The card is excellent, build quality is great. Look of the card is awesome backplate, feels really solid.
No coil whine, fans turn off during light use. under full load over-clocked I was seeing 75C, at 1500mhz core. Card is pretty much silent, even under full load it's really quiet.
Also broke my previous 3D Mark11 record, knocking my Titan X off the top spot. Very happy with this card.

Does anyone know when the classified cards are coming out, I'm with my reference card atm going to see how the classys do I may just keep my reference and wait for pascal to come next year (y)

Going to order a Palit Super Jetstream, I think its probably the nicest looking 980TI has comparable performance to the MSI and is not only quiet but cheaper. Shame about the 2 year warranty though.

I know it's funny coming from a 980Ti owner at 1080p, even though I often use Ultra HD DSR. In my opinion though three way SLI is just too powerful to be well utilised at 1440p. I expect to see poor scaling on the third card at this resolution.

Look at the scaling on the third card at Ultra HD! 43% max in rare cases, so it could really look a lot worse on the less GPU dependent resolutions. I know it's tempting when you have money burning a hole in your pocket but the cash may be better used on even little pascal, which as Kaap will deny in his opinion, could be close to 980Ti SLI performance in one card with the ridiculously long awaited major die shrink and extra performance per watt over 2nd gen Maxwell.
The main thing I took away from that is this
Stock speeds is silly for multi GPU scenarios.
I do agree on what else you said though. Getting that 3rd card also means I might need to get a better PSU as well, which is extra cost. That's over €1000 for the GPU and PSU then.
Could be better saved for Pascal, but Witcher 3 fully maxed at ~90+fps with G-Sync *drools*
They also did an updated article with 3 980Ti's and a newer CPU at 4.2Ghz. Much better results.

Now it seems in some cases over 1 card the max scaling is upto 235% at 4K.
Seems I really need to go to 4K to get the best of more than two cards though. Bring on 120Hz IPS 4K G-sync/FreeSync please!

Thanks for the updated article. I notice three way SLI caused negative minimum fps scaling compared to two way which is interesting. I know how it feels to have that itch though because even I'm tempted to get another with some recent free cash being available. I'm gonna put it away though and probably pick up a Note 5 hopefully if they don't completely nerf the enthusiast features like with the s6.

I'm hoping DX12 is all they hype it up to be and developers actually use it correctly. None of the DX10/11 games with tacked on DX12 features and then claim it's DX12.
Same Multi GPU scaling, and CPU efficiency.

Yes its fine, to be honest the difference between a 6+8pin card like this inno and the 8+8pin is about 50mhz give or take, which is single digits in actual games
The 8-pin cards are bios limited anyway so if you actually wanted to get the most out of them you have to be prepared to flash the bios, if not then save some cash and get a decent 6+8pin
So I caved and bought two on Friday. Spent the last month telling myself that my 970s were fine but I just couldn't resist 
Witcher 3 at 4K wasn't really playable with the 970s on medium/high settings. Now I have it on ultra and it's running like a dream. Thanks OCuk!

I would not get too excited about DX12 and getting rid of CPU bottlenecking.
If you look at Mantle when used on a top end CPU there were small gains but if a game was CPU bottlenecked with DX11 it was also bottlenecked with Mantle. I think it will be the same with DX12.
I sometimes think people are looking at the scaling problems that can happen @1080p the wrong way.
If I am crazy enough to run 4 TXs @1080p I am going to be CPU bottlenecked a lot of the time but the bottom line is it does not matter. If I am still getting over 150 fps there are no monitors on the market that can handle this frame rate. 150fps and 450fps look exactly the same on screen.

Bring on G-Sync/FreeSync 240Hz panels!
Also for people on 1080p monitors I easily recommend DSR/VSR if they're getting "too much" FPS.
I'll just be happy with my games fully maxed out at over 70fps 1440p to take advantage of my monitor. The more the merrier as it makes such a difference up to 144hz.
I'll jump to 4K once we get some G/Freesync ones with over 120hz.

My 30" 1600p Dell monitor is a very good quality one but as soon as I saw the UP3214Q 4k one running next to it there was absolutely no contest. For clarity colours and sharpness the 32" 4k monitor wins hands down.
