I've been umming and ahhing about whether to pull the trigger on that HOF card. Most I've ever spent on a GPU was the Sapphire R9 290 deal from OCUK on release, but the HOF looks so future-proof. Decisions decisions!
Cheers. Seems like a decent price on the EVGA Superclocked ACX 2.0 at the moment too, although I prefer the look of the stock cooler and the fact that it extracts the warm air from the case. So as long as it's reasonably cool and quiet at stock it should be good.My EVGA reference is not noisy, I have it manually set to 60% and it sounds like a quiet pleasant breeze. 100% is like a jet plane taking off but no one should have it that high anyway.
I hear EVGA are one of the best for Warranties which was partly my reason for choosing them this time around.

MSI Twin Frozr or the Reference?
Twin Frozr's fans don't start up until ~65c I believe, 50c idle is nothing really.
twin frozr
seems to even out around 57 which just seems very high for just web browsing.
MSI GTX 980TI just arrived replacing a MSI GTX 980.
Idle temps are in the 50s. Is that normal? The card it replaced idled in the 30s.
as mentioned, the MSI card's fans are off up to 60C, if you don't like the idle temp then use MSI Afterburner to set the fans to something like 30% up to 60C instead of being off and the idle temps will plummet to <30C
Probably depends on your monitor res, mine is currently at 50c but that's on a 4k panel.
What is your idle core clock speed?
