Why is a PSU suddenly the problem when a Gigabyte G1 gets powered from it?

It's the cards that cause the whine, not the PSU!

In some instances it can be the psu, there's example on here and other forums people swapping out their psu and it minimising or eliminating coil whine.

My point is that you should not have to change out a perfectly good PSU to stop a card from causing coil whine.

I had a G1 Gaming that whined, whilst the GTX 980 it replaced didn't whine, replaced G1 Gaming, whined, replaced it again, still whined, replaced PSU (Corsair CX750 to SuperFlower Leadex Gold 850W), still whined but admittedly not nearly as bad, sold the G1 Gaming & replaced it with a Strix, Strix whines a whole lot less - But the guy who bought the G1 Gaming said it had no whine whatsoever..

Capping FPS using RivaTuner has basically made my card inaudible though, but that shouldn't be something you have to do really.

I'm currently running a pair of the EVGA reference design 980ti SC in SLi. I'm getting temperatures of up to and around 80-85° between the cards, when not particularly under load. Nothing too strenuous or demanding but higher than expected when gaming. Am I to believe this is just how these newer cards run? They run at high temps with boost, and then throttle when hitting 85°?

Or should I be concerned?

I am running at 1440 resolution, and at 144MHz on the ASUS Swift panel as in my sig. I've got a well cooled, roomy case with good airflow, pulling in air from the front and bottom and venting from the rear and top.

Any reassurance would be appreciated, as I'd hate to think I'm shortening the life of these amazing cards.

With stock fan curve those temps are fine (even the single card is setup to get to 85 degrees).

If you're not happy with it you can pick up the EVGA AIO cooler for 90£, but there's nothing wrong with your cards.

If I recall correctly, your card will never be "truly" idle if you have your refresh rate set to 144Hz for the Windows desktop, however setting it to 120Hz seems to fix this. A user had the same problem with his core clocks never dropping at idle (which I assume is why your cards are running hot) here - http://forums.overclockers.co.uk/showthread.php?t=18631230 - There were a couple of posts explaining how to fix it

I think I answered I n more detail in another thread but at the time the Asus was sat on the printer shelf hidden behind the 40" panel. I've since fitted an Ergotron arm on the wall holding a 22" HP as I've sold the Asus. Main display is sat on a TV style stand, two legs, flat glass base.

Not done anything at all with it yet. Just spent the last few hours wrestling trifire out (acrylic tubing, custom panels and the triple bridge made it a right ballache) and rejigging the loop.

I've got my beady eyes on one of these. Just can't decide on which one...

I'm sure this'll do just fine, but I'm gonna miss the trifire setup

Sure, I didn't use all three that often, but it was nice to have it if needed and as you know, you can't beat the pimpery of multi card WC
