The GTX 980 Ti owners thread.

So I'm off to the US in a few weeks and was thinking of picking up a 980TI from a know US Electrical/Electronics goods store. Prices seem to be around £120 cheaper. The two cards I've been looking at are "Reference Design" as I want the hot air to be pushed out of the case rather than circulating. The choices I have are either the Zotac or PNY.
Is there much difference bertween the two? If so which is the better card?

If both brands are reference then no there is no difference at all on the hardware side of things apart from slight clock differences at boost which you yourself can change in Afterburner.

Just get the cheaper of the 2 and enjoy :)

wont you still have to pay import duty when brining back into the UK

Impressed with how my MSI Gaming edition 980ti copes with my new Asus Swift @ 2560x1440.

Was a bit apprehensive going from 1080p but games are still silky smooth even with settings notched up.

Not if its in my suitcase and the box has been opened. And as long as I dont keep the receipt as proof of purchase. I'll say my friend gave it to me as a gift.

What are they going to say?

unless I get stopped physically and they search my case, I think I'll be OK.

I've also taken many tech related things over to my brother in Berlin when certain things have been cheaper over here like memory, SSD's and even a 970 not long ago and never been asked for import tax as it's been in my hold luggage.

You'll very rarely (if ever) have to declare and pay extra duty on tech stuff you take round the EU. Unless you're doing it large scale for selling etc. obviously.

On the subject of the 980, would this be a worthwhile upgrade from a 780, or should I wait till the price comes down or when I upgrade the rest of my computer? Only upgraded to a 4770K and the 780 the middle of last year, and seems to manage ok for what I'm playing and the resolution I play at at the minute.

out of interest those of you who use a h55 for cooling, what are you using to control fan speed? or are you setting it fixed and leaving it?

I have the pump/G10 bracket fan at 100% through a system header (given that the on card fan is silent in my set up) and the H55 fan I run at 50% when not gaming and crank it to 100% when in game.

I did have the fan running off a curve at one point, but prefer now to just spin it up for best cooling.

Stuck my 980ti in the rig yesterday. Wow! What an upgrade from my GTX670.
Rocking FarCry 4 at 1440p Ultra locked at 60fps. My 670 could barely scape 20fps at those settings.

The card I got is the KFA2 Infin8. I have to say, the fan is pretty loud when playing games. Anyone else notice this or have my ears just got accustomed to the relatively quiet 670?

looking at it, it looks like it has 80mm fans?
I tried a windforce (same size), and ended up with an MSI gaming (2x100mm) and later added a Strix (3x90mm) and they are both much quieter than the windforce

they are audible on higher fan settings, but not at all what I would call intrusive
I run my MSI on about 70% and the Asus on 55% @ 1480 to keep them under 70C

Try setting a custom fan setting to what you find comfortable and then see what temps / boosts it does, some of the manufacturers have set very aggressive fan profiles, others less so, you might be able to get a sound level you are happier with by setting it manually

Going from a 670 to 980ti really is WOW!:)

Planning on picking up 2 x 980Ti's in Jan sales. HAve picked up on the fact that Ti's in SLi dump a lot of heat into the case. What are the recommendations for cards in SLI format?

2 x reference blowers or 1 x hybrid and any aftermarket 980ti

Do all 980Ti's clock well, even reference blower cards?

Thanks in advance
