Perhaps I'm naive but I've been surprised recently that a number of Scottish, Welsh and Irish people still have a deep dislike of the English. Is this solely due to historical differences or something else?

Is the fact that England is a more populous and wealthier country an issue?

I'm not trying to start any trouble ... just curious.

Well I can talk from experience, born in Essex moved to Wales

I have survived 14 or so years, they do like to give you a grilling for being English sometimes especially when the rugby is on :p

@DJMK4. I get that. It's a bit of banter between the neighbouring nations. Totally understandable. I've been guilty of that on many an occasion.

@Pestilence. If we're all guilty why are the English targeted in particular? Because we're more accomplished at it? :D

I always want the Scots, Irish, and Welsh footy teams to do well but they all want us to lose. It seems to be the younger ones that want us to fail. Never had a problem with the older generation.

Well... a proportion of the Irish do not like you for ignorant historical reasons.

Otherwise, as I grew up in NI I generally disliked the English as 98% of the English people I came into contact with was an utter **** with a weird accent. :D

Since I've lived in England for over 5 years now, I've come to recognise that that's not a blanket realism, so just let people get on with it. I refuse to bow to the accent, though!!!

Just carrying on the tradition!

Bloody English *****!

Please fully star out swear words!

:p

Edit: You kidding me? A single s? Quit being so pedantic, mods.

I don't mind the English at all, I'll probably end up living there when I'm older. Although when I was down visiting my Uncle in Cornwall, they did seem to be a bit more ignorant than the people over here (Northern Ireland)

My dad is from NI. Ards in particular. He's been here over 50 years and shows no signs of picking up our accent. He's never had a problem with the English but then he is a proddy ******* :D

Time for a change Tephnos. In the spirit of solidarity you have to display the St George Cross in your window for a whole week. Scratch that. We don't want you getting hurt.

Please fully star out swear words!

You might meet pockets of people that dislike the English in far flung countries but by digging a bit deeper you'll normally find that an Irish, Scots, or Welsh person has been there first and polluted their mind :D

There's no English people backing me up here. They're probably off somewhere else being arrogant and self-assured.

I can't say I've ever noticed it, perhaps only in jest.

They know England is the superior nation so I try to be the bigger man and accept it as banter.

I've been there a couple of times DaZe. Such friendly people.

I was tipped off about the places I can and can't go though. All I had to do was follow my cousin and his Rangers shirt and I was guaranteed of safety.
