The hating of the English.

Hopefully superiority isn't judged by the size of a population. That would mean the French are slightly superior to us. That won't do at all.

It also means the Americans are vastly superior! I ain't having that :D

Perhaps I'm naive but I've been surprised recently that a number of English people still have a deep dislike of the Scottish, Welsh and Irish. Is this solely due to historical differences or something else?
My guess would be mainly historical reasons; Out of interest would you say this is mainly people of an older generation?

I've come across a few people similar to the ones you describe, but they're often 50years+.

I've yet to meet an English old timer that really doesn't like the Irish, Scottish or Welsh. They might spout off in the pub about it but if one of 'em walked in the pub they'd be chatty. I think sometimes people say what they're conditioned to say without giving it any thought.

I've been there a couple of times DaZe. Such friendly people.

I was tipped off about the places I can and can't go though. All I had to do was follow my cousin and his Rangers shirt and I was guaranteed of safety.

It's not a bad place to live, most people are friendly enough but you do get your idiots (same with everywhere). Generally nicer folk down the peninsula. And there's only so far you can go wearing a Rangers shirt lol... :)

the guy in the following pic is Danish. He used to love the English until he befriended another pal from Dublin who turned him against us. Relishing a challenge I made this pic:

He was fuming!

Is the fact that England is a more populous and wealthier country an issue?

I'm not trying to start any trouble ... just curious.

You will find it is not just the Scottish, Irish and welsh, it's also the Germans, French, mannish, Australians, Swiss,....

I should say "really?" to that but in reality the only response is "it's a side-effect of being awesome where others aren't" :D

Most of the animosity is bred from historical actions. Old scars cut deep, but also, in these days of mutual help and economic solidarity, they are (frankly) stupid.

England has been the leading nation in one of the planet's most influential empires and to acquire other nations in that manner you have to step on toes. The British Empire did many bad things, but it also modernised and 'civilised' as it went. People prefer to forget the benefits of British rule in order to be able to blame someone else for past injustices. Add in the fact that 'empire' has become a very dirty word and the fact that the BE was the most recent biggun and England becomes an easy target.

Of course, Irish and Scortish hatred usually stems from past attempts at conquest, the handling of the Great Famine, the Highland Clearances and so on. But dig into the historical record and you find that both Irish and Scottish landowners ****** their own people over, too. But that doesn't quite fit into the nationalist's plucky peasant Braveheart POV so it is brushed under the carpet in exchange for an evil English shadow. Of course, for the ROI there is also the matter of The Troubles, but I haven't read much on that so can't comment.

I'm not denying that some English acts were terrible, but in mitigation, those centuries gone by we're extremely violent and bloody. With roles reversed the Scots et al would have done similar.

Personally, I'm like most Englishmen - part Irish, part Scottish. When you look at what our tiny countries achieved TOGETHER it is astounding.

Having worked and lived in Scotland for the past two years, in my experience the Scots don't hate the English, in fact they have been very welcoming and have been very friendly on a personal level. They do want English teams to lose at sport though and is something I don't understand as I always want the home nations to win.

I was up in Scotland the other week, and have talked to a few in the past, they seemed friendly enough.

From what I've heard Wales and Ireland are the same, but it depends where you go i guess, their is good and bad everywhere, plenty people hating us and plenty liking us..

You don't have to look far on this forum and you'll find people ****ging off Scotland and the rest, its like the done thing. Don't think it's pure hatred.

Last year I had the distinct displeasure of watching Ireland demolish England in the Six Nations with three Irishmen and a Scot in the common room of our halls. As the match went on the "banter" got worse and worse, and slid into outright abusiveness, with the Scot especially bellowing "#### off!" at me with real venom behind it every time Ireland went over. These were lads I considered mates, I'd regularly go the pub or the gym with them, but this one set of circumstances seemed to spark some crude tribalism and they turned outright abusive, seemingly taking out whatever issues they had with English on me. It was pretty disappointing coming from "mates".

certainly not true for ze Germans. As long we can have snatch the sun loungers before the English turn up we are ok....... :p

There is a lot of respect in Germany for England, this is sometimes forgotten about current political differences in regards of attitude to Europa and the usual noise in the media when football is on, nevertheless this isn't a reflection of peoples general views.
There are a lot of historic ties between both countries and don't forget that the House of Windsor has German roots (basically "just re-branded" from Saxe-Coburg and Gotha of The House of Wettin to House of Windsor, due to the anti-German sentiment of WWI)

When I go on holidays abroad and foreigners ask where I'm from I tell them I'm from Cork in Ireland.
When asked what football team I support I don't admit to liking football.
I find the holiday can go a bit smoother using the above after some experiences I've had.

I find it funny how last world cup the Scots invented those T-Shirts "Anyone but England".

It's all just jealousy and hatred directed at us because as countries, they simply aren't as good.

My slogan for Sunday is: Anyone but Murray!

well holiday experiences are a totally different story and I don't think any nationality in bigger concentrations look very "attractive"...I occasionally pretend to be English looking at the behaviour of some of my countrymen on holidays.

Funny experience though when returning to Bristol after a holiday in Hotel where most people came from Germany and all English passengers in the transfer bus "had a bit of a rant" about their experiences with German tourists...just to realise that my wife and I are actually Germans .....went a bit quiet in the bus after that for the rest of the journey

I've noticed it in Scotland and a bit in Wales, but as I've no intention of going there again they can do what they like.
Just so long as they maintain the castles we built, we might need them again one day :)
