I'd love to do this but I don't know if my greenhouse is warm enough in the day time. There's only a period of about 10am - 1pm that the sun shines on it as my house faces west (thus blocking out the greenhouse after 1pm).

Can anyone suggest anything else?

I grew Cayennes successfully in my living room windowsill last year.

Hi everyone, I'm new to this and looking at growing some of my own, just a quick question, is it possible to grow a variety of different peppers on my window sill without effecting the outcome, due to cross pollination or whatever, or is this not a problem?

Gonna give growing chilies a go this year for the first time.

Mainly want a plant I can grow on my windowsill and keep through the winter.
Got myself 3 different strains to grow.
  • Little Elf
  • Variegata
  • Numex Centennial

Gonna need to learn a few things.

I'm going to try and step it up a notch, had great difficulty last year as I spend 1 week in three away, so ordered an audrino, moisture sensors, light sensors, temprature sensors, humidity sensors and a water pump. If I get a green house i'll add some more controls to go with this sensors(like something to open windows). I have no idea how to put it together but hey ho.

Perfectly possible. You will be doing the pollination yourself so just ensure that you don't cross pollinate.

Having said that I did manage to produce some odd looking chillies this year down to what I think was cross pollination.

I'm going to look at getting my first sowing done this weekend maybe :)

Doesn't cross pollination only affect the seeds, and not the growing fruit, so you are fine unless you then grow plants from those seeds. I may well be wrong, but that's how I thought it worked.

Hope mine are better than last year compared to the year before total waste of time probably use the seeds I still have left up.

Arrrr, you're right! :) I've learnt something there.

I guess the same applies for chillies as it does for pumpkins:

NC State University said:
Two different cultivars of pumpkin can cross-pollinate, but the fruit would be not affected. However, if you saved and plant seeds from these cross-pollinated pumpkins you might get fruits of many different shapes, sizes, and colors.

Has anyone managed to keep plants alive over the winter?

I grow mine from seedlings in my greenhouse and have grown some huge 4-5' plants (in compost and fed on tomato feed). Cutting them back in the Autumn helps to keep them alive over the winter in the house, but I've only managed to keep one or two out of the 20 or so plants I've grown over the last 5 years. I didn't bother bringing any of them in last year as like the year before, they were struck by greenfly.

Last year I managed, I left them outside all winter and some how survived. And they cropped lovely. They haven't survived this time, well I assume they haven't. They've been in the dark wardrobe since the last crop with no light or water.

They're pretty hardy when fully grown, which I was very surprised about.

Little water pump arrived today, just need the rest of the kit to arrive, then some help from someone who knows electronics.

Anyone grown them using hydroponics/aquaculture? Thinking about growing some in caddies in my open top aquarium, are there varieties that don't mind having their feet wet?

I'd start them off somewhere else though, as I imagine seeds would just rot if submerged.

Can't say I have, most chilli plants are around the 2ft high mark anyway. Never had an issue with them being to big.

Seeds have shipped, they are out of poblano though, so went for Maule's Red Hot Chilli Pepper instead.
This hot chilli is ideally suited to using to make chilli sauce and to be also used fresh or in a chilli con carne where lots of chilli flavour is needed. Produces lots of 6" to 8" fruits.

I buy loads of peppadew peppers (the hotter of the two varieties with the red jar tops) to use on pizzas and in sandwiches. Can someone suggest a similar chilli which I could grow? Just moved from a 2 bed flat to a 4 bed house and so actually have plenty of windowsill space now to start things off, and some space outdoors when it gets warmer.

I've grown a few varieties hydroponically, it's not that hard and you get a lot less pests than in soil. I'm going for naga jolokia and paper lanterns in water this year :). Start the seeds off in rockwool cubes.
Has anyone tried to grow a bonchi? ( Bonsai Chili )

Edit : Example

I like the thought of a bonsai chilli but not sure i'd have the patience for it.
