The Heat is on!!!! 2013 chilli growing thread

There might be something in this.
My Jalapenos and Cayennes are already about 4" tall but the Habanero is only about 1 1/2" tall. It has plenty of leaves and looks healthy but it is growing a lot slower than the others. I know they're slow growing, I'm just not sure how slow and if this is normal. It'll be interesting to see if they actually get anywhere. They're not short of heat as there is a Folding rig next to them blasting out heat from an i7 950 and and overclocked GTX 690 running full tilt :D They're also in a South(ish) facing bay window so they get the maximum of what sun there is.

I think its all down to luck really. My scotch bonnet plants grew very slowly as expected, but they did get hundreds of flowers. Then we got a couple of weeks of hardly any sun at all and all the flowers just dropped.

If your plants flower when we have a good few days of strong sun then they should produce fruit. If not then you have a better chance next year as they will have a head start.

Reported most of my chillis, they where getting very long legged end, most of them over 4" high and starting to look unhealthy, hopefully they'll shoot roots out for most of the stem which is now under compost. Still got 6 King Moricha to pot up.

And why do they sell mismatched numbers of pots to saucers. Brought two packs of each yet only half have saucers.

On polystyrene just to try and get them closer to the grow lights. Might even stick some books under it.

The hotter the chili, the thicker the staimen is and I just can't pollinate them, the really hot ones like the moricha and nagalah I will put out side when they start flowering and allow the bees to do what they do best.

All potted up, doing nicely now.

Mine have come up a treat the last week or so, really rapid growth, will have to get some pics up later!
Not sure whether to put them in the greenhouse or not, weather is still so unpredictable!

snip

I read you can add extra compost to the bottom of the stem, and unlike other plants, the chilli will root out of the covered stem. Might be a way to 'fix' it assuming they can now get access to light.

My pepper plant is about to the stage as your largest plant in that photo. When should I plant it out into its main pot? I plan to plant it out into a fairly large pot (about 30cm diameter).

I've just moved some of my chilli plants out from under my lights. They've gotten quite big now, though I kind of left them alone for too long so they're not as healthy as I'd like.

Ignore the horrible looking yard/window. I'm moving house soon :p

A good rule of thumb for almost any plant is to re-pot it once you can see roots through the drainage holes in the bottom of the pot. Maybe give it a week after you first see the roots. If you can see a massive 'mosaic' of roots then the plant definitely needs re-potting.

i have planted 3 types. jalapeno's, cayenne and scotch bonnets. only just started so i'll see how they get on.

My cayenne still haven't germinated so I've only got jalapeno and sweet peppers. Currently on the office window cill because I ran out of room at home. I might take them back & stick them in the greenhouse if the weather improves.

I never had any luck with an "easy" set up, it wasn't till I invested in this did I have any luck.

Greenhouse would work, but they need heat and light.

Buy chili focus, do not over water.

Mild chilis for what? They have distinctive tastes and most are only suitable for certain things.

Where did you buy this light? 9 tubes?

I can only see 8 tubes for sale.
