Am currently redoing HL2 with the portal gun for some extra fun

Up to here right now;

paint seems to have messed up the images but you get the point

How did you get the portal gun in HL2? I tried but when i loaded a map all i got was wireframe with big red ERROR blocks all over the place

extracted the hl2 gcf maps + cache's into the portal\portal folder, set up the maps to be recognised by portal (there is a guide on steam forums) and linked the maps together.

impulse 101 in the console with hacks turned on and you have the guns + portal gun.

All i get is a black screen then an error when i try and load any maps. The guide i found on steam forums doesnt explain how to link the map files.

I extracted the HL2 maps into the portal directory, and the scenes too, which is all it said to do, then fired up the game, and loaded a map and it just crashes

I cant, no, have followed the instructions osted on the steam forums to the letter and it just doesnt work

Nah its surprisingly playable still, normally I'd agree but I reckon 20fps is ok in this game for some reason

Nah they are pretty good, it looks better in motion. Maybe someone can make a HD video and put it on that divx stage22 website

Yeah, it's just the bad jpeg compression, the game quite frankly makes Farcry look like a cartoon. Here are some less compressed screenshots, originally taken at 1680x1050 with high details:
