The High-Res Screenshot Thread!

I think that some don’t like my beloved Arma 2. ‘Looks awful’!, bit harsh.

I don’t think it looks too bad , still each to their own..:D

A Takistan one crept in at the end there, still, it gives a comparison to the foliage... Couple of ai going at it hell for leather, GL4 mod, the ai will go anywhere to get a good shot..

The problem with ARMA is the Anti-Aliasing option creates some weird mesh effect on grass and stuff.

Oh I see, that’s not the AA, that’s probably the FXAA I have running. I don’t see it ‘mesh’, however I’m getting on, so it could be me..
Also I'm playing 'windowed' mode, so have a bit of an odd res at the mo, I'm testing missions I have made and its easy to get out of the game when its in window mode, ALt + Tab can sometimes be a nightmare..

Edit: FXAA, does put a blur on tree's too, but I don't mind that, got to get your fps from somewhere with arma :D

I have to agree arma looks really bad graphics wise whys it get so much love in screen shots must look better in game or something :P

Check this album: http://s198.photobucket.com/albums/aa309/bum_hanky/socom/

Its using lots of post processing effects. unfortunately these need to be added by the mission maker as map modules. Those are gameplay captures. The dawn/dusk change is also very unique and amazing.

Unfortunately for the most part. the games settings are limited server side. and the game is, in all fairness, very old. For a game that is more of a "Sim" its very impressive i think.

By the looks of things ArmA3 will improve things even more.

The end of the album has some examples of it being played online on a server where the post processing effects etc are not applied, and the general settings are lower. A shocking difference.

Here is some game play footage: http://www.youtube.com/user/jakspyder Settings on very high all round with low anti aliasing and grass turned off. Mixed visual quality here usually determined by how well made the map we are playing on is. Operation Run Down has imo, a higher standard of visual as the map is very well made. Cutting Board is very dense woodland which, with grass turned off looks fairly poor.

Arma 2 looks pretty awful if I'm honest. The texture work seems bad but also the edges of everything seem far too sharp and full of jaggys and well, just generally wrong.

It doesn't look terrible considering its age though.

The art style is interesting and realistic, but the technical side is lacking a hell of a lot I agree, it looks even worse in game.

Pretty sure realistic isn't an art style :p

The realistic look really does help it though.

EDIT: Now I think about it, I suppose you COULD call realistic an art style.

To me you see, there is colour and vibrancy in arma and arma 2, ofp was a little greener looking with minimal colour. Having sharper edges rather than blurred, as seen in lots of games and lower res images, are more real imo. Just taste I suppose, how you want to see your game, each to their own..

I could have course make it blurry and faded, but to me a game has to look as real as pos. I don't tinker with the look of shots, just stick them on as they were took.

yeah ARC same, that last shot does look cell shaded though. Maybe due to high speed the textures are not LOD changing fast enough. Can be a problem with AMD cards. The only fix iv found was just to chuck em on SSDs.

The almost sure fire way to convert someone to arma2 visuals is to play the game maxed out at dusk. The transition from day to night is something else. But screenshots only show a split second of an hour to 30 min long process of win.

Maybe it depends on the res your viewing them in, not sure. I play and view in 1920x1080 usually, these are in windowed mode as I’m making missions at present for arma 2 so are just under that mark. I look through your album ‘jakspyder’ and they look to me, and this is all down to personal taste, blurry and a little washed out greenie/grey. However, that could be my screen at a different res thats different to the shots taken, if the game looks its best to you, then that’s o.k. each to their own, no problems with that.
I want sharp vibrant screen when I play the game. Of course no shots are exactly how you see them on your own screen, they all loose quality when uploading them etc (png).
I have said its all personal taste. I don’t comment on other pics without putting full size high res ones up myself, most of the shots I see carry quite a lot of blur PP, I just dislike PP, but there again I use fxaa which also blurs but only slightly, but gets you high aa look without the performance hit.

My settings are mostly very high, I use ‘IVD’ in game so ignore the view distance, on the ground 2000vd is enough and in the air if in combat 5000-6000 out and about looking around its full 10000. The ‘Low’ aa setting is made far better with fxaa as said to a high to very high aa look. I play on the ground with around 45-55 fps and in the air it can be upto 75-85 fps these are average fps on the ground in cities it can go down to 35-45 then again out in the open it can go upto 60-70, all with combat say around 100ai, I don't make huge battles as I don't want a slide show.. As we know the fps jumps around in A2.

I think its best that those who comment should put full size high res pics up on here, we could all then compare, perhaps..

Agreed, my shots were severly downsized by photobucket hence them appearing more blured than intended. You're right though PP SUCKS in arma2 in motion. Unfortunately I no longer have the originals. guess its time to make some more ehy?

Atm im playing with your settings but fullscreen with 1920x1200. very low PP, default video memory and the SMAA up top with low AA. On AMD cards. Performance is good with the same view distances you use.

2k for ground.
3-4K flying transport
5-6k flying combat craft.
5-6k in tanks (gun/commander) and as sniper/spotted/TAC-P.
10K is only run very rarely again for recon purpose. and when im stationary.

Those last 2 shots look a lot more like what I'm used to. Very nice.

Could be your higher res is bringing out bits in my shots that I don’t see, that’s what I wonder sometimes looking at screenshots, I could quite possibly be looking at something different to the way the poster see’s it, if you understand what I mean.

Anyway look forward to some of your new shots (full size), be nice, got to keep the arma light burning...;) the only other arma shots we see on here tend to be dayz.
