The 'Hiper-Explosive' Club

Got back from work last night, turned the pc on then went downstairs to get a drink. On my return the pc was powered down and the room stank of burnt toast, seems mine decided to fail after about 6 months - short fuse even by hiper standards :)

I've ordered a new OCZ one for now, I hear they're louder than the hipers but have the distinct advantage of not exploding.

Well my Hiper 670W PSU had to go back for an RMA the other week.

It was making some pretty insane noises when I had it powering my 8800 Ultra especially in 3d apps.

It seems that most of the failures start with whining and screeching noises before the PSU goes kaput.

Maybe there is too much voltage running through the fans.

Edit: Do PC's have ears

I put this post in and 15 mins later my pc just switches off

Just for the record, its not taken anything else out with it I presume?

The new psu arrived a while back and thankfully it seems the hiper didn't take anything with it, seems quieter than the hiper was too though it has so many cables my case is a bit messy. No smoke now though.

I have a Hiper 580w modular...it's in the box now put away, i moved the pc into another room while i decorated....happy with my handy work of painting....set the pc back up.....turned it on......eh????...pc is dead!!!! nooooooooo. Called a pal of mine to get his spare pc parts....built another machine...dropped in the hiper.....turned it on....fine.......next day...turned it on...eh????.....pc is dead. Killed two boards and cost me £300 in all.

Opening a psu sounds slightly suicidal anyway, reminds me of the time I took apart a electric wall socket just to see how it worked

Meh...I took apart my old Q-Tec ;) aha!

Replaced the fan, cause the stock one decided to die on me.

So far my 580 typeR has not let me down but now concerned after reading this thread and have up graded gpu to a 880GTX. Is there anyway to monitor psu temps? As my Commando mobo has no reading in the bios for this.

Powering a E6400, x2gb ram, x1 880gtx, x2 sata, x1 optical, x1 floppy, x1 chipset fan, Zalman 9700, x4 120mm fans, x1 200mm fan and hardcano 13

Hope it does not blow.
