The 'Hiper-Explosive' Club

I've heard bascially zilch about them. Either it's because they don't sell very well or because they're much better quality. I guess someone will post that has more kno how :p

Hi,

Add me too my 580w modular blew up today after about a year. Noticed it buzzing a few weeks back. But I was going on holiday so did nothing about it other than switch it off at the wall before leaving. Lasted a few days after returning!! Didnt take any components with it. Just emailed hiper hopefully ill get an rma.

Cheers,
Hugest

add me to the list, mine went last sunday and has just arrived at there hq for repair/replacement. are they still making the 580 type r? or will i be getting an alternative?
sorry should have said earlier that i got a brand new psu after just under two weeks of it dying.
even got the tool box, stickers and loads of extra leads!!

Can anyone comment on the reliability of the replacements Hiper are sending out?

I replaced my Hiper 580w unit with an OCZ 600w stealthstream unit but it's really noisy.

To avoid buying a third PSU I was thinking of fitting the Hiper 580w replacement when it arrives as the last one operated without a problem for 2 years and was far quieter.

well the only problem with the replacement is that they only continue the warranty for the rest of the old period. so you have a new power supply but its only got half the cover, or less depending on the time it died originally.

This is a scary thread to read! I've had my 580w Type R for well over a year trouble free. It's currently powering my OC'd and watercooled E6600 rig, which is clocked at 3.6Ghz, it's been constantly Folding for over 6 months 24/7, and more than 6 months before that with my old Opty 170 rig.... Trouble free...

Im worried now as i leave it on all the time that one day i'll come home to a pile of ashes!!

Do i swap it 'before' it goes up in smoke ? If so, what do people advise on as a replacment ?

Cheers,

Rich.

seems to be less problems with the newer replacements that are bing sent out. the primary cap on the secondary stage seems to have been changed for a different brand one in the newer batches.

funny enough the 480w and 530w hipers seem to have better components in them according to other forums. very interesting to say the least.

Had mine for 1 year on 22nd of July 2007 :)

So far so good?

But I am concerned at what I read if I'm honest :(

EDIT: And same question as above for me?

The fuse on these explosives is 1 year, after that its anyones guess :D

If its a good psu it shouldnt matter if it fails or not, it shouldnt overvolt and it shouldnt damage components. I dont know if thats the case here but I expect you would be fine.

First post gives a good summary but was last updated April

Don't think mine's blown anything else, but it's deffinately gone. Built a new machine around the new PSU, but the old kit did more with the new PSU than it did with the Hiper. Add that to the dead list :(

Got my local PC shop to build me a high end PC (I was a noob back then ;) )
Sempron 3100+
1GB ram
Geforce 6600GT
Hiper Type-R 480
+ hdd ect from my old system

Had the system for about 3 months working fine, Went to work for a 9-5 and at about 11am it started to thunder and I remembered I left the PC plugged in :( Along with a lot of other stuff :o

That day I lost...
x1 Hiper Type-R PSU
x1 Geforce 6600GT
x1 Netgear router
x1 crt 17" monitor
x1 Kitchen toaster

Since I had a Hiper in the house I think its reasonable to blame the thunderstorm on the hiper PSU

Btw the rest of the PC still worked somehow  Stuck a 500w generic PSU in there and brought a 7300GT and it still works to this day.

Another one to join....(and another to come from hyper active club, it was a matter of time i suppose)

Mine has been fine since 05, would not power up this morning... took it out to smell burnt toast coming from inside it.

Rest of the pc is ok PHEW !!!!!!

Well I had planned on posting in the 'Hiper Active Club'... until Friday when my Hiper Type-R 580w went boom after 18 months

Well, boom is a bit extreme as I came home to find my PC off (And several other things off because it tripped my power breaker!)

The red light on the power switch comes on but there's a high pitched whine and the fans won't spin, nice and dead.

Can't say if it killed any other components yet!, I'm going to RMA it for a replacement (to sell!). Already bought a replacement and it certainly isn't another Hiper, I went for a Corsair 520w instead.
