The i7 has landed for pre-order.

Clock for clock in single threaded apps there isnt much difference, The power of I7 is in the hypertheading, With multi threaded apps its a lot faster but there isnt really much game wise that can even use all 8 threads at the moment. I'll be sticking with my qx9650 till the 6 or 8 core versions are out along with skulltrail 2 :p

Got a bad feeling ya right on that one, although I hope that's not the case !

Maybe Farcry 2 will see all 8 and skyrocket in performance:)

lol, people pre-ordering with no benchmarks out or overclocking info for 2.66ghz version out. DONT buy those 3gb and 6gb kits, buy a 1600mhz 2gb or 4gb kit for around £120-150 then in 6months time or so buy a 6gb 1800mhz kit as the prices are ridiculous. The only difference as far as i'm aware is that the 3 sticks have been tested together and have a warranty together, im 99% they are identical to the 4gb kits, no point wasting money.

Cpu price is very high and the motherboards price is just plain ridiculous £250 for a board, no thanks! I wont be buying along with most others until boards are under £120 and cpu's under £180.

Plain greed by intel due to have no genuine competition. As for the voltage rumour on the ram killing the cpu's thats bloody alarming, there is a sticker on the mobo on 1 of the links in this thread saying not to use more than 1.65v so it looks like its genuine even if gibbo hasnt experienced the problem it doesnt mean it doesnt exist, like with those users who use over 1.3675v on their e8500 cpu's, some work fine some die quickly and cant get their maximum overclock back.

I'll keep an eye on benchmarks and overclocks but i refuse to pay these ludicrous prices for a likely 15% performance boost. My 3.7ghz quad will keep me ticking along just fine for 6-9months until cheaper boards and ram kits are out and intel slashes the prices of it's 2.66ghz.

Have to totally agree with you there. I have a funny feeling a lot of people will be sticking with C2D for some time yet. With these high prices I cant see many people buying i7. Just does not seem worth it for a likely 15% performance boost.

the jump in performance just isn't good enough for the big prices here. i'm nowhere near as hyped as i was going from the A64's to the C2D's when they first surfaced, i'll wait a long while before going this route because of the above - the core2's are just too good to draw me away.

That is, unless these new ones can hit 5ghz easily :)

The jump in performance is pretty good, but 99% of people just simply don't need it - even the E6600 @ 3gig is more than plenty of speed for most real world useage.

Spoke to our firms IT contact at another e-tailer today and they don't expect the i7 until end of November so not quite sure where OCUK got their "end-of-October" date from.

The other e-tailer could not confirm prices at this time

I think thats the only customers i7 will get those that listened to the "nehalem will be here soon wait for that" upgraders, those that really need the extra power whatever extra that may be and the "i must have the latest thing" brigade. For the vast vast majority of us we already have more then enough power to do what we need or will need for some time to come. Right now i am not sure people have the money to go buying into the latest tech as it is let alone at the prices OcUK put up.

^^ What he said - I'll be upgrading from my Opti setup to a P45/Wolfdale combo in a few months time when the prices bottom out (and I can afford the 4x4Gb Ram package! ;) )

It's all about value for money for me now (the actual requirement for bleeding edge performance is grossly over-estimated, as demonstrated by ATi's recent success - As I don't do much encode/decode I simply don't need the raw power, and to be honest - I don't do anything along those lines that can't be left running overnight, when even my Opti is more than adequate!) I'm just too old/jaded to chase the hottest tech anymore - I want a rig that does what I need well, doesn't cost over the odds and WORKS EVERY TIME! (Probably why my Mach 1 is gathering dust and my radiators have been retired! )
