The Indoor Riding/ Zwift/ TrainerRoad etc. Thread

I really should learn some self-control. With good intentions of a gentle Zone 2 ToW Stage 1 ride earlier, there was the usual fast start, but I told myself that if I stayed with the front group it would settle down. And it did, but thoughts of Z2 and 'it's not a race' were forgotton as Leith Hill approached... So much for an easy day and being fresher for the morning :(

Just going back to AdZ times, is anyone else more impressed by the longer PB times you see posted, knowing that they've gone all-out for, say, 2 long hours (compared to someone going full-beans for 1 hour)?

Yes and no. I couldn't go at the effort level I was at doing AdZ in just over an hour if I was doing it in around 2 so it would have been a different experience. I think that if you are going for your best time on AdZ it doesn't matter if it takes an hour or two, its bloody hard.

Yes, agreed, but I wasn't really meaning the same person doing different length rides. I was just thinking that someone going all-out to get a 2 hour Alpe PB will have shown more determination / suffered more than someone else with a more "impressive" 1 hour time.
Anyway, you're completely right that it's bloody hard (or should be if you're doing it properly!)

Yeah, I had a slightly similar ride, but further back in the pack! I'm generally a D or C rider, so as I started the 16.3mi version yesterday, with 1,600 participants I decided a goal would be top 1,000 and a stretch goal would be top half. As we arrived at the start of the climb (which, as a 100kg rider I knew would be where it would be tough for me) I was around 730th. About half way I'd dropped to 860 and decided that it might be possible if I reached the top just a little higher so put the effort in and got back to about 820th.

I didn't know how far was left at the time (it turned out to be about 2 mins more of the climb) my chain came off on the inside of the cassette and proceeded to get jammed inside the cassette. I had to take the bike off the trainer and take the cassette off to get the chain back out. 22 minutes it took and A LOT of oil all over my hands. I was pleased with myself I still got back on and finished  Annoyed though, being so close to the top, I would definitely have gained a few more places on the descent and probably finished top 800.

I must've been in the same ride as you Andy. I started off quite well but then after 10km I genuinely thought I may, erm, have a brown river incident

Thought I'd be smart and turn off all the visual overlay and play in 'first person' I thought that would help me not worry about position and just ride the route. Which worked for the most part but I've noticed that it's actually quite hard to tell the gradient changes in Zwift before it's too late. Got to the climb and I knew it would be a world of pain and I was right, I was 3 minutes slower than last time I tried it!

56 minutes in the end which I'm really annoyed with because I know I could've done a bit better but seeing as it's the first time I've been on the bike in a month I shouldn't feel too bad. Just need to build up some fitness before Week 6 because I want to tick off route A that week

Looks like the 3 of us were all in the same event :)

Ugh, that's tough luck. You've got a few more days to give it another go.

I don't mind AdZ if I'm in the right mood, and find the extra progress info for each section helpful to maintain a consistent pace. I rather stupidly did the AdZ straight after a race a couple of days ago which the legs regretted a bit afterwards.
It's more fun than ven-top which can be pretty monotonous.
When I do Adz I just set a power makes it very easy, say 240w.

Haven't done AdZ for a while but had a few goes in the past. That's how I did it, increasing power slightly each time. A variation on this is to add a few over/under efforts to get you out of the saddle and avoid a num bum. Losing kgs really helps too because it's all just maths and w/kg.

I assumed it was the former, and was waiting for somone to say "wot, no gear changing?" :D

Pfft, if you don't have to change your own gears its at least 20% easier. I am constantly changing between the 34 and 32 tooth rings at the back :p

Thats obviously just because I am a powerhouse

Anyone thinking about doing the official Tour De Zwift races (stages 1 and 2 available) over the weekend?

I always chuckle when I see Strava ride titles along the lines of "10th" for a Zwift tour group ride... Now they can compete with others in an offical tour races, where everyone is starting knowing it's a race!

Can't say I'll take part, it's the long route for each TDZ stage, my longest turbo ride of '23 was only ~80mins due to ongoing long covid fatigue and https://zwifterbikes.web.app/ suggests these routes will take me 2.25+ hours. Shame they aren't racing the shorter routes and there isn't a GC over the weeks, they are all one-off races.
