The Indoor Riding/ Zwift/ TrainerRoad etc. Thread

Get some streaming content, watch something you can get immersed in, and times flies by.

I try, podcasts etc, I can watch those during work in the background etc but on zwift I struggle. Helps for sure but my mental limit is still around 1hr 30 or so..

I never really find that helps. There's just something about indoor training which bores me to death. Even watching football i find myself staring at the clock counting down to the end!

yeah same issue, its boring but it's a "must" for me at this stage, I want to get fit enough to enjoy 40-50k rides when the weather improves.

I still remember a mate laughing at me when we were in the gym and i gave up on a treadmill after 25 minutes. At the time i was into running long events in the Lake District at 10+ hours, yet just couldn't face indoor running for even 30 minutes.

I think it's a very mental thing that some people just struggle with.

Must say i cope better with my Kickr Bike as there's no display, so i tend to just set a power output on my phone and turn the display off and watch an episode and it goes by much quicker without a timer counting in front of me

It's funny - with running, I started off on a treadmill (years ago now) and could happily plod along for an hour plus watching TV or something. I've since run a couple of marathons and a few other races, and trained outside entirely for them. I ran on a treadmill last week as I'd been ill and couldn't face the cold, and could barely hack 20 minutes, it was horribly dull.

I discovered that a combination of my standing desk and Balatro assists greatly on the bike indoors (albeit only for recovery rides - if going hard, my hands are too sweaty for the mouse)!

Pre October '22, it was turbo saddle pain that was my limiting factor, but I then got a Selle SMP "beaky" saddle and that made the world of difference, allowing me to do 90mins+ without discomfort.

Then it was boredom, if I was trying to strictly keep to sub z3.

Now it's often my legs struggling to do beyond 40mins continuous.

Yesterday I did a lap of Petite Douleur on Zwift in freeride at 100% trainer difficulty (26/36/48 triple with 12-36 cassette, barely managed to use 48/26 as my easiest gear at 96Kg), hitting the little Instestine ramps fairly hard, recovering a bit on downhills and doing a threshold+ (209W estimate FTP from 95% 20mins) effort up Petit KOM. It was a pretty engaging ~26mins to do the 14Km lap! https://www.strava.com/activities/13407217821/analysis/0/1607

I find that Petit KOM anything but petit.

TR has me doing recovery rides all week so I'm going to finish Bad Boys 4 tonight and watch a podcast for the rest. Best part is I have 1400m left to go until the Tron Bike. So I should get that this week.

I'll be glad to do some routes that aren't the Alpe going forwards. Bored of the sight of it now!

Petit KOM and other climbs are far more of a slog for me now than they were 2.5+ years ago, yesterday's threshold effort was 8mins41secs, but my best from '21 is 6mins, feels a lifetime ago.
