Edit: Actually (if you can call it an FPS), Deus Ex 3 came close to hitting that mark for me, this was largely due to the nostalgia factor though.

Never got on with the Half Life series, guess it's all subjective. Much prefered UT.

Half-Life was my number one till S.T.A.L.K.E.R Shadow of Chernobyl came out and knocked it out of orbit.

How could I have forgotten about S.T.A.L.K.E.R?! Having seen the movie and read the book only makes it so much better.

I always felt like System Shock 2 was more of a hybrid shooter (pardon the pun), it has way more depth than a "normal FPS" like Half Life.

Can't argue with that. I guess that's part of why I prefer SS2 as a game

I didnt like Stalker. I thought the gun mechanics where pretty bad to be honest.

As an FPS it still hasnt been beaten.

As a game in general, its been beaten by quite a few games.

From a multi-player perspective, probably.

From a single player perspective, probably not. Does Deus Ex 1 count as an FPS? If not, then Farcry would be up there in my opinion.

Then again, it's all down to personal taste. I preferred the '1984 resistance fighters' setting of HL2 to the underground facility with exotic aliens of HL1, but I'd still call HL1 the better game gameplay-wise.

Half Life is the greatest FPS of all time. Deus Ex is the greatest game of all time.

System Shock 2 is more alike to Deus Ex than Half Life, and thus can't compete imo.

For multiplayer, planetside / the in development planetside 2
