The last game you completed, and rating.

Dark Souls 3.

To me at least, this is a 9/10.

Actually played this again after playing Jedi Fallen Order, being struck by how similar it is Dark Souls games but not as good. So replayed DS1 and then DS3 which I hadn't completed fully some years back. Started them again feeling less than ever that difficult games are what I want to play, or that I'm good at them, but the Souls' games combat is just that good it's worth the effort.

Every weapon or spell feels like it has impact with a distinct style, there's so many different ways to play. The game's overall glass cannon style instead of bullet sponge is just more exciting in general. Both you and most enemies in Souls games can dish out a lot of damage but not take much, meaning things feel more deadly, brutal and exciting. Also much more frustrating and annoying at times, but that's the formula and why it works - the struggle causes more enjoyment in victory.

The art direction is superb with a much weirder feel and meticulous dark fantasy design than many Western designed games. Influenced mostly by the Beserk manga series which I've got since and also highly recommend.

This time round managed to beat every single boss, including DLC, some solo but many with help from all the great Sunbros, for such a brutal series the Sunbros are some of the best coop partners in any game.

For an easy time I did a Strength build with Greatsword and Yhorm's Greatshield with lightweight armour, but some bosses you have to change up a playstyle which could be seen as a limitation or gives the game more variety whichever way you look at it.

Despite their reputations for being difficult, it's surprising how much you can get through the souls games without being greatly skilled, there's always some kind of tactic to employ that makes things easier, or even just a Sunbro to beat the boss with you if all else has failed.

So without being very good at the game or wanting to play hard games again, I really enjoyed it and highly recommend it to anyone, especially new Souls players who just played Demon Souls on PS5. The best action RPGs I've played to date are the Souls series, they're also great games for any action or RPG fans in general.

Halo Reach - one of the best of the series and better than a lot of the ‘next gen’ titles currently being released.
Started playing that when it was released on Steam in the Master Collection. Still not completed it. I like Halo, but for me it has not aged as well maybe as it has not grabbed me enough to get me to complete it in all this time. Where as a buggy "next gen" game like Cyberpunk 2077 has me coming back for more and more (even though it is not as good as we all expected).

CP 2077

9.5/10

**** the haters, I say.

Yes, its a bit rough around the edges but that's no different to every other open world RPG that's ever launched, and there are far worse examples of bugs than in this game.

Only once did I have to use an old save point to get past a point when one of the NPC's (Saul) didn't initiate a dialogue to progress the game and I never had a game crash.

..Glad I didn't spend big bucks on a 3080 or (god forbid) a 3090 for it though, My 2080 coped far better at 1440p with RT than I was expecting.

Horizon Zero Dawn 8/10. Just finished the main story, now continuing to pick up the last collectables and play the DLC. Will then do the final quest again.

Spent about 70 hours on it, not rushing. Love plotting how to kill a bunch of machines, then screwing it up and brute forcing it with my massive damage! Or just overriding one and sitting back and watch the carnage

Demon's Souls - 9/10

I bought a PS3 and a PS5 for this game and have no regrets. And haven't enjoyed a launch game as much since Mario 64 - which is saying a lot as as I've already played Dmone's Souls a bunch! Unforgiving, unfair, unexplained - and all the better for it. It's also gorgeous, challenging and totally rewarding - with the best atmosphere of any Souls title. Part of what makes Demons' and other Souls games is that they require the community that builds up around the them. Even basic mechanics are a mystery at the start. I suggest getting onlline to work out how some of the thigns work, but not guides (at least at first) that tell you how to get through areas and beat bosses.

Really hard one for me to score. It didn't crash for me, I experienced very few bugs, or at least didn't notice many, I loved the side missions as much as the main missions and I've pumped a ridiculous amount of time in to the game over the last 10 days and loved every second of it.

I feel like I should be giving it a 10/10 but I didn't enjoy it as much as TLOU2, which I gave 9/10, yet experienced far less issues and found it easier to play for longer periods of time. Things like Ellie falling through the floor, the horse completely disappearing as I rode off and whole scenes disappearing were both common and very noticeable. I can only assume people didn't care as much about the bugs in TLOU2 because they were too busy being butthurt about the story which I absolutely loved. Suppose that, as well as how a game makes me feel, is just more important to me. Cyberpunk was amazing fun, just not memorable like TLOU2 was for me.

TLOU/Deus Ex are my two 10/10 games, TLOU2 was 9/10 so I'll give this an 8/10 which feels wrong :D

It is at least a 9 I recon :)

Cyberpunk, 90hrs played, 10/10 for every game that takes this amount of enjoyable time from me in such a short period. 2 weeks of work for me it would be 75hrs...and it's not even been 2 weeks since the release...Mood of this game will stay with me for a while. Don't care about some bugs that I encountered.
How can you spend £50 for 7hrs repetitive spiderman gameplay now

Dark Souls Remastered - 9/10. Having played DS3 and sekiro before this game I was keen to see what all the fuss was about. Having not played this when it first game out I can now understand why it was (and is) still so good. The level and game design is just amazing and I did not realise that DS3 is effectively a rehash of DS1 with slightly quicker combat system and harder bosses. Some of the levels are slightly annoying and I died more from gravity than from combat but it was still a joy to play over the 40 or so hours I put in. I did find the bosses easier than Ds3/ sekiro and slightly missed the "get gud" challenge but overall great game.

The Darkening, an eleven map WAD for Doom 2.

I played this with Beautiful Doom and an enemy randomiser mod.

Great to dip in and out of for a map or two, here and there.

Cyberpunk 2077 - 8/10. A really tough one to rate and I've gone points up and down from this but I think this is fair overall. I've now played 75 hours according to Steam (in game counter is a bit less as I've replayed the endings a few times). I've always loved the Cyberpunk genre so that probably influences my score.

You absolutely could ‘finish’ the main story in 30 - 35 hours but you would rob yourself of at least half of the game.

My achievement progress:

Not really a spoiler, but to be on the safe side:

TL: DR - It's a fantastic world, with a lot of great story elements and tons of things to do but it is beset by bugs as I'm sure you've heard, there were certain features that could have been included and other areas could be better balanced.

The Good:
1. The world of Night City is phenomenal, there's a lot to do when you get out of the main storyline. Some of the side missions and gigs are absolutely hilarious and there are a lot of fun characters to interact with.

2. The characters are also great. I wasn't expecting
Johnny Silverhand to be in the game so much, thought it would just be at the start.
A lot of the characters you meet through the missions are well developed with clear motivations, the animation and design of those characters is also well executed.

3. The graphics in a lot of places are breathtaking. This part is slightly mixed as there are some areas that look incredible then for some reason in others things look a little 'flat' or cardboard. Not sure if that's just due it time constraints in development.

4. Atmosphere / genre accuracy. As mentioned above I love the Cyberpunk genre, read a lot of books, watched a lot of films and played games in the genre. A lot of parts of this game nail the feeling of what I'd imagined it would be like to live in a cyberpunk world. Namely, always being on edge, never knowing if you would be betrayed, the process of setting up a run. That was all great.

5. Flexibility. I played basically in 'Rambo' / tank mode with full frontal assaults but I've seen a few alternate hacker builds and stealth builds on YouTube and it appears there are a lot of alternate ways to play.

6. Fun. There are a lot of fun activities to do on the side missions. Hacking through enemies with a katana was a real blast.

The Bad:
1. The bugs. Curiously, I didn't find all that many when playing the main storyline but as I started doing the side quests they were more apparent. Must be because CDPR used devs to play the game as the only form of QA. Only had two crashes the whole time, one very early on then much, much later everything locked up. No real issue though as the game autosaves pretty often.

I can't defend the bugs, if this sort of thing ruins a game for you then it will be a deal breaker. Most of them I just found amusing, didn't affect my enjoyment.

My bug list, just off the top of my head. May add more later:
Gun disappeared, but could still aim down sights,
Scopes stopped working (blacked out),
Vehicles sunk into the ground,
People sunk into the ground,
People floating in the air,
Corpses floating in the air,
Objects floating in the air / out of characters hands,
Clipped through scenery a few times,
Fell through the world (only happened after the hotfixes!),
Cars and items randomly dropping out of the sky,
Piles of rubbish on the streets exploding,
Motorbikes can take a stupidly unrealistic amount of damage - I've literally driven off cliffs and been fine (was pretty hilarious though),
Couldn't progress objective because an enemy clipped through the floor (was a play through of an alternate ending so didn't matter by then),
Enemies (particularly cyberpsychos) just stopping / not defending themselves,
Characters slow to continue speaking to progress the mission,
One NPC in 'T' pose,
I didn't have the 'T' pose for V until after the hotfixes! Was quite amusing when he stands on a moving motorbike seat and his pants disappear,
HUD elements remaining on screen,
Boss health bars remaining on screen,
Dropped an unconscious woman accidentally and she somehow ended up standing on her feet,
Called my car and another car rammed underneath it,
Talking to a major NPC and he ‘leaned’ on nothing then skated over to where he should have been leaning,
Characters talking over each other / two conversations at once,
Lighting was sometimes odd, particularly other characters’ eyes when driving (Panam was the worst for this). Had almost a Stargate glowing effect,
Stash doesn’t work properly, accessing it from some vehicles doesn’t show all of the items that are in it,
Buttons on controller stopped working, e.g. couldn't call car or accelerator stopped working in car.

2. Lack of balance. Probably a 'bug' in a sense but things get unbalanced pretty quickly, you can stack armour and damage a lot so once you get past about 30 on street cred you're too strong for most enemies. Towards the end I died more being run over by cars than from the enemies. I'm not that great at games (play more for the story) but even I found it a pretty easy game.

This is also an issue in terms of overlapping systems. I didn’t use a single consumable in my 70 hour playthrough, they were irrelevant. Similarly, I used cyberware a little but it’s mostly passive, background effects. I used the time slowing to get the achievement but other than that double jump was the most useful. Gorilla arms are fun, didn’t even try mantis blades or nanowire.

3. Lack of real choice. There aren't really that many options where you can choose what you want to do during the bulk of the game. Some of the dialogue choices don't do anything really so you end up just choosing one way in the end. I think some of these could have had more options. Biggest choices are really in the endings.

4. Gangs. I didn't really watch a lot of the videos and read articles leading up to the game as I didn't want to spoil it for myself so I wasn't as affected by the hype train but I can understand why people are annoyed that the gangs don't really mean anything. There should have been some sort of 'reputation' system that affected missions offered. There's only one occasion where your previous actions are mentioned by a gang. You can slaughter hundreds of gang members (and I did) and it doesn't really affect anything.

5. The Police. I think CDPR have tried for a GTA style system but not executed it properly, it's too unfair on the spawning system and it's too easy to just run / drive away from them.

Suggested Improvements:
1. Sort out the balance. Perhaps a cap on armour, damage and the amount of loot would keep things challenging. The enemies should also have to play by the same rules with regards to the caps.

2. Sort out the Police. Should be fairly easy with a bit of tweaking.

3. Fix the bugs, obviously. I imagine this is going to take a while.

Summary:
Don't let the negatives put you off playing CP2077. The 'core' of the game is already in place and I don't think future patches can change what is already there in terms of mechanics and story, it will just add the additional polish that is missing at the moment in terms of bugs.

Will probably add to this and edit over time as I've probably missed loads of relevant points out!

Some of the pics I've taken on the journey (they're not really spoilers, just hidden in case anyone quotes):

Funny glitch from photo mode where I was trying to take the pic after this one:

The South will rise again! :D :D

I'm left with a bit of a void now in terms of gaming. There's very little on the horizon that I'm looking forward to so we'll see when the next time I play a game is.

Horizon Zero Dawn - 8/10

Main story completed, but plenty of side missions left. I'll take a break for now but will definitely return periodically. The game looks fantastic at 4k and HDR implementation is superb. Performance on a 3080 is consistently around 70fps with everything max.

1 point dropped as it can sometimes take an age to load.
1 point dropped as the crafting/resources system could do with improvement.

Hard to disagree with much of this. I can’t say I’ve played a game that has immersed me this much in such a long time, it’s just a shame the bugs break immersion quite often. I honestly forget I’m playing a game sometimes and it’s been full of a fair few welcome surprises too - I too wasn’t expecting what you weren’t expecting :).

Probably a 9/10 for me - with some better functioning AI, a more realistic transport system and some more choices with impact it would have been a 10/10. The story and presentation alone make up for many of its shortcomings. I’d honestly buy any dlc without a second thought and will likely play through again in future.

Glad I played on my 55’ TV, it really helped bring the game to life.

Titanfall 2 - 9/10

How did I miss this one? What it does it does really well. Didn’t realise it was made by respawn, they are a creative bunch, constantly new elements introduced throughout. It was short, but very enjoyable. I wouldn’t have played half of these games without game pass, it’s brilliant!

Call of Duty Modern Warfare (campaign) 6/10.

Well I usually start an fps review by stating my disgruntlement at the usual walk forward, shoot, walk forward and shoot fest that they have sadly become.

This did however mix up the ante somewhat by making me play hide and seek as a child, interrogate and be interrogated and act as a cctv controller.

I’ll be honest I wished for more of the walk forward and shoot because when that happened it was generally very good, although a long way from the epic cowboy moments you get in RDR2 such as pushing a wagon down the high street of Valentine whilst shooting up the town!

Fave parts were sneaking around with the night vision goggles and the sniper mission was fun but short. I think the series is starting to veer to far from what once made it good even if that formula is somewhat repetitive.
