The Last Kingdom - new series for BBC based on Bernard Cornwell's Saxon stories

Is this worth watching? Or am I going to be annoyed?

I absolutely love the books. Probably my favourite books of all time.

I don't read much but I think it was the Martian. And watching after reading kind of made me feel the film sucked.

Thats a tough one for most people they read the book, any book, first and can't stand the adaptation(s) or its the opposite way around. Personally I loved it but I havn't read the books. I could also go on about how anglo saxon history is one of the most neglected parts of our story everyone knows 1066 and all that but before that, almost nothing and yet so much of it is true like the hundreds of longships landing up and down the coast and the near extinction of england or the idea of england.. yup that happened.

I have never understood why there is always a big buzz about a series that turns into a film - its basically a story told over the equivalent of 1.5 episodes - so lacks the depth of a series.

I quite liked the series but it was finished as far as I knew, so I'm happy enough to watch a bit more!

I know this was a while ago, but yeah normally book adaptations have a lot to live up to, two that sit in my mind..The Beach and The Firm, loved the books and actually really liked the films but while watching you are always thinking erm what no that shouldn't happen etc.

Just watched the Seven kings must die film, very good. I'm a huge fan of The Last Kingdom so I expected this to be good and it was.

Never watched the series, although I just started season 1, I guess I need to before I watch the film?

I would. The film follows on directly from the series, and does little to properly introduce characters and background to people who haven't seen the series.

I think it's better thought of as a high budget feature length final episode.

I got about half way through episode 1 and got bored. Not for me!

Just watched the film and cant help but feel it was very rushed, seemed to have taken a lot of inspiration from the later series of GOT ie the teleporting and lack of timescale was rather jarring, it would have been far better as a series imo. And the less said of the "modern audience" inclusion the better, not that im a historian to say otherwise but that really didn't seem fitting with the times, happy to be proved otherwise.
Overall it was a good end to the series on the final battle alone but seems a missed opportunity to get one last season out of it, which seems a bit of a tangent to the usual flogging a dead horse of late.
