The Legend of Zelda - Tears of the Kingdom(use spoiler tags!)

It was only meant to be a light hearted post showing the last console they released without Zelda on the horizon was a disaster, not a serious analysis of whether Zelda is the key to success :p

I know but since we're on an esoteric subject on a PC building site I thought we could get nerdy in the discourse :)

I really want to play this....but I'm not buying an OLED Switch for the privilege

Sold my switch a couple years ago and not spending £400 odd for new switch and the game.
I'd spend £500 odd on a switch 2 if it runs games at even a reasonable framerate

You can buy used oled in vgood condition if you look around for around £220 average. The older models obviously cheaper.

Not entirely surprising. Wonder what sort of limits there will be on the amiibo going forward.

Have amiibo just lost their mass appeal recently, save for examples like the above? I swear they used to be available in droves.

You don't need an OLED Switch to play this game

As others have said, you can buy second hand for a good price, and what's best about buying second hand, is when you've compered the game, you can sells second hand and recover almost all your money.

Depending how much I like totk, I am likely to sell my white oled switch on members market after I've completed the game as I will definitely have no big use left for the console.

If you wait until June, once I complete the game you can have my Zelda and switch for around half that price on members market ;)

But a second hand one, and sell it when done. Free gaming.

That is my strategy with Nintendo consoles going forward actually. My Switch gathered way too much dust :(
That's how I did try and do it. I bought second hand, played botw, and then sold on.

However when the new oled came out, I was like, you know what, I'm going to get it new and put some effort into playing Nintendo games.

Big mistake. There's barely anything. My xbox is out doing 1000 to 1 hours compared to switch.

Won't do it again. If I buy the next Nintendo console, it'll be to play the next zelda game, and I'll buy it all second hand.

Even though the switch is the cheapest console, it's been the worst value for money

put it this way...I realised two things during all of this.

1. I dont like modern Zelda games
2. The absolute limits of the system have been reached, undocked is not a nice thing to see and this ideally should have been a flagship switch2 launch game.

Let's go one further :D

You don't need to play this game

Genuine question, what are you considering modern when it comes to Zelda? Just one game back from the mainline came out 12 years ago (I didn't like SS tbh).

2. The absolute limits of the system have been reached, undocked is not a nice thing to see and this ideally should have been a flagship switch2 launch game.

Nintendo continuing to sell bucket loads of consoles is a good incentive for them not to do that.

There is (and probably always will be) a massive divide between a very loud minority of gamers, and the realistic commercial position for Nintendo. The fact of the matter is the majority of gamers playing Nintendo games really couldn't give a rats about performance or hardware specs.

I think it's the new audience that go into gaming and go with Nintendo whereas those who have done a fair share of gaming expect more in terms of hardware and performance.

I would consider 'modern' to be anything 3D. Played all the classic Zelda games and loved them as a kid, but its hard to find a groove with the 3D ones. that said if people loved the last game, then they will clearly be getting a lot of value from the new release.

You are correct with the second point ofc, and for most games im fine with that too but this was the first time I found that the console is really not up to the task to the point of it being very off putting.

I'd guess the majority of switch owners are parents who have bought it for their kid(s) because it also replaces the Gameboy.

Kids love a handheld console and parents love it because it keeps the kids away from using the TV, they can play it in their room or quietly on the sofa etc. Parents also see the switch as more kid friendly because it doesn't have all the 1st person shooters or GTA with blood and gore everywhere.

Speaking from experience, as somebody who owns a gaming PC and a PS5... My daughter plays the Switch and will choose it every day over playing the PS5 or learning how to use KB & Mouse for PC games
The switch is designed fully with kids in mind, it's everything they want and it's priced at a price which parents are willing to stretch to even if they're on a budget

On a random Reddit thread earlier discussing a different Switch game and a lot of comments were deleted, someone asked what had happened and apparently it was bots spamming TOTK spoilers.

Nowhere is safe! :(

Don't get me wrong I don't think it's going to be a massively in depth game story wise (I don't know for sure, it might be), but definitely keen to go in as blind as possible.

100% agree, I fall into that second category for sure. As above with another commenter, I'd pay good money for a powerful Nintendo console.

Interestingly GameCube, amongst its contemporaries, was equal to or the more powerful console, and it didn't do well. Then Nintendo fire off a console that's leagues behind the competition performance wise and blows them out of the water.

I'm looking forward to whatever their next iteration is but I fully expect them to just do what they want and a lot of us to be disappointed again :D

If TOTK isn't up to scratch in terms of performance I certainly hope the reviewers don't give it a free pass on that front, both journalists and the public.

Here's hoping it's up to scratch and a more powerful new console is round the corner.

That said I wasn't that sensitive to any BOTW frame drops, except for the obvious one where even my non-framerate-sensitive partner noted how crap it was running.

If I remember critics were saying the GC didn't get enough developers because it could only store 1.5gb data and wasn't full size which was also way cheaper to use.

But yea let's see what they have in store for their next console and line up.

It's a shame it didn't release with totk because 20fps is not really acceptable.

The only frame rate issues I recall from botw was the centre of korok forest where it nosedived. Not unplayable but I certainly avoided going there unless necessary.

I think I may have unwittingly read a fairly big story spoiler on a semi-related YouTube video (something about Zelda music composition) - though i've deliberately avoided checking to see if it's true or not, because i'd rather live in the hope it's just someone on a wind up posting nonsense.

Should have known better than to dip into the comments really
