The Legend of Zelda - Tears of the Kingdom(use spoiler tags!)

Is it vital to have played and completed Breath of the Wild fully to enjoy this one 'properly'?

I jumped straight into Tears. There's a Recap video on the Nintendo YouTube page for BOTW if you need it but tbh I don't think even that is essential.

There are some characters who cross over and it does take place straight after BoTW but honestly you could just play this standalone if you wanted to.

I'm absolutely loving this game - I got my copy at 11am yesterday and forced myself to stop at 1am. It has that magical exploration factor, where you start trying to do one thing and then get side tracked by 5 other things.

I think both BOW and TOTK are a little mean in that if you miss something or prioritise exploring, you can ‘miss out’ of key events.

With that in mind, I have something to say that is a ‘non-spoiler’ but ‘very helpful advice’ that I want to offer to avoid time wasting… it’s as generic as it comes. In short, it’s “do this to avoid missing something and saving time”. But I’ll put it in a spoiler just so people have the option to avoid… but it’s definitely not a ‘details specific spoiler’:

Always go back and speak to people you have been speaking to. There is often a cascading set of missions and if you don’t do them, by going “meh I CBA to speak to these people - I want to explore!” then you can miss out on ‘key(ish) stuff’.

^ the same applies to Breath of the Wild, where a side mission unlocks other things, but at that point I just wanted to get on with exploring so only did that side mission at the end of the game… which then gave a way of easily finding all those damn photo locations in BOW.

I put in like 100hrs on BoTW but never finished it, just explore and do shrines, ferries and side quests stuff, only done 2 of the 4 Devine Beasts, and went straight into this. I like how it treat you like a noob and teaches all the moves again as I honestly forgot. Only done 2 of the 3 shrines in the opening area so far and it has taken 2hrs lol

I wasn't overly fussed for TOTK as I didn't really 'get' BOTW but I had money on my Game account so thought I'd just give it a go (mainly due to FOMO from here and elsewhere!) and I'm glad I did - genuinely can't put it down.

Can't work out exactly what they've done differently but I'm loving it.
