The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power (Prime)

Am I the only one who cannot stop thinking of this when I see Adar on screen? I half expect Dot Cotton to be in the background with a fag in hand.

The whole show reeks of desperation. Every episode is littered with callbacks and 'memberries in a tragic sttempt to link it to PJ's beloved trilogy and therefore back to Tolkien. "Look it's like the same as the thing you like that's good!" - 1 BILLION DOLLARS ON THIS???

And let's not foget how all this started:

"Not your grandfather's Tokien" "We want to tell our own stories" "...for modern audiences" etc

I have to say that watching Midget Clarke screwing her little face up trying to look mean and intimidating is one of the most sad and pathetic things i've ever seen in a TV show. Firstly it's completely out of character, like the whole portral of Galadriel in fact. Secondly and this is also not her fault, she is completely and utterly miscast.

How did they think this Galadriel could carry this show?

This just shows you that this entire debacle was dead before it even entered production.

It's almost like they made the show to appeal to the masses, rather than for the hardcore Lord of the Rings fans. Still, 136 pages in and it seems like the majority are enjoying the show.

Why don't they just bring LOTR into the modern era 2024? why stick with a fantasy setting where people never evolve.

middle earth 2024 lets gooo, how can younger audiences identify with natural beauty? and boomer settings
Sauron = El Nino

they've failed miserably then in both regards haven't they
Obviously not when you discount the very small minority who continue to post about how much they hate the show. The second season is much improved and better then house of the dragon for many people (which should have easily been the TV show of the year). The majority of the feedback has been positive for season 2, unless you are a hardcore Tolkien fan etc.

I hate to comment on other people's tastes but I have to question people's discernment if anyone thinks this show is good... it is terrible as a stand alone show let alone as a Tolkien offering.

It is an utter shambles of stupidity which just becomes dumber and dumber the more you step back and think about it, though I'm still watching it mostly just to see it out now.

This latest episode for instance you have Uruks supposedly sneaking up on Arondir (albeit he does react to them quickly), but Uruks wouldn't get within a mile of a Silvan (Wood) elf unnoticed... the writers don't have a clue and I don't think care to have a clue either. And that is one of the less dumb things - almost everything is utterly stupid if you stop and think about it for a moment.

If you think this is a good show then you have a very very low bar. I think people "like it" because it looks great on their OLED. It could be argued it is a bit of a visual treat on the most surface level, ie the image quality in certain scenes, because nothing of the "dressing" of the show looks good at all, like the sets and costumes.

It's not Tolkien, no-one cares about on of the chraracters, the story is awful and nothing but a laundry list of callbacks to PJ, and 'memberberries, the script is laughable, the acting is very poor, the roles are miscast, the sets and constumes are rubbish, the fight scenes are hilarious - so what to like? some flashy visual moments.

But, LOTR still looks better than this and it is 20 years old, even in 1080p the costumes/sets/world etc are much better. Watch LOTR in 4K and it blows ROP off the screen completely.

And yet viewership is in the toilet, they've alienated the 'hard-core Tolkien fan' and 'normies' aren't watching. So yes, they've failed miserably.

I really don’t get “the sets and costumes are rubbish” comments.

Can someone post a few screen shots and point out exactly what’s wrong with them?

Someone said earlier that the armour looked like cardboard or something - since then I’ve been looking out for this cardboard armour but haven’t noticed it (shrugs).

E: There’s plenty of valid criticism of TRoP, I just don’t see the sets and costumes as one of them.

I haven’t seen this new series but maybe it’s informed by modern film techniques and filters.

When the first Hobbit film came out, I saw the 48 fps version (double frame rate compared to the norm) and the costumes looked super cheap and ridiculous, like from a CBBC show!

Grain and filters can help the ridiculous look more cinematic… ‘improving’ the visuals can actually make it look more goofy. Especially with the fantasy genre.

Just an idea.

Exactly. Anyone who’s ever enjoy Tolkien’s books hate what’s been done to a beloved franchise and normies don’t see enough of a new and engaging story to be bothered to watch.
