Dream of a manager that won nothing in 5 years and ended up on 54% win percentage?

Football is not a purely statistical game. Why have PSG changed their manager every few seasons. I reckon their win percentage is up in the 80's.

Tottenham spent very little, had a smaller squad of lower quality than the teams around them and were outperforming them. There is a reason Poch got so much praise. He took that Tottenham side further than anyone imagined, on a shoestring budget and he had them playing really nice football. Contrast that with us over the past 8 years and we have played **** football for 90% of it, have spent enough money that we should be competing for the league every season and still have no real style or tactical identity.

Most of us here think Ole has done really well in some areas. Got rid of some of the deadwood, brought in some good players, brought on some youth players and brought a bit of positivity back to the squad. Unfortunately, his actual coaching and management ability is not there.

I’m not going to go into this with you. You think Ole is a master tactician and a good manager. I think that says everything that needs to be said.

And as always, Fez sums it up nicely!

Let’s not forget how many penalties we won last season either.

It's hard not to lose confidence in the manager when you see such poor performances, characterised by a lack of energy and fight. Add to that the comical defending and you have to question
1. Either the ability of the coaching staff
2. The intelligence of the players who cannot follow a plan

I'm tempted to say its the latter as I think we do have players like AWB and Luke Shaw who have very low footballing intelligence but it's augmented by a lack of fight and inspirational leadership from both the players and the manager. How often do you you see OGS on the touch line bawling at them. He's doe eyed staring at that Ipad most of the time. Many moons ago it was touted that he might be a better DoF than coach and to be fair he has cleared out some (only some) dead wood but those he has brought in haven't improved to top four standard other than maybe Fernandes and even he is floundering. It's a depressing mess in all honesty - we'd be better off with Hasenhutel - at least his team looks like it wants to fight in most games.

Still not sure what Shaw provides, people say he's solid but at what? Fair enough he put one decent cross in but that was about it.. plenty of more opportunities to do the same but it didn't happen.

Also for the first goal what was Matic doing? A player of his experience.. again people say he's good but generally too slow and maybe good as a bench player

At the end of the day it's all about the performance and as we know the manager has to take responsibility.. it's something different every game that's going wrong.

I kind of wish Everton is a loss too so everyone is put out of their misery, I don't like to wish ill or be harsh but it is what it is

We all know Ole is a top bloke, nice guy etc. but that's not translating to motivating players.. Keano said players shouldn't need motivating which is right and wrong. We've seen what managers like Klopp can do to what would otherwise be average players.. but also players should be giving their all anyway but they have become bigger than that these days

Shaw created our only goal. He also made the most key passes on the pitch (same against Arsenal btw). He was one of our best players last night, bit weird to ask what he provides.

One assist in 9 games? Better than nothing I guess which is what he got last season

He was the best player you said , Well done to him. Not difficult when you have someone like fernandes losing the ball 34 times

Anyway with any luck Telles can show him how it’s done

You always need balance in any assessment. I've never been a big fan of his but I can admit he has been one of our more consistent players. He's decent defensively, prone to errors of positioning occasionally but not really any worse than AWB. However, compared the full backs in other top clubs I think he is massively limited in an attacking sense. Having said that, he's far from the biggest problem to be solved. wan Bissaka is terrible going forward, positional sense is suspect but manages to mask these inadequacies with eye catching interventions. I also think he is stunted when it comes to footballing intelligence. Him and Dan James as a right sided combo is quite painful to watch. To think we had Neville and Beckham for years! What I can't understand is why Ole used Williams to get Shaw to step up even though he is a right sided player. Why wouldn't you do the same with AWB to keep him on his toes.

I think that is the plan. Telles competing on the left and Williams on the right. Telles looked fantastic in the PSG game but then got rona. Williams has been missing since all those rumours of the partying surfaced. he has been in the under 23's since. I do agree going forward our full backs are the main problem going forward. This is especially apparent playing teams with the low block as we need that width to break them down.

I do see improvements though. AWB has already scored a goal, Shaw seems to be taking corners now as well getting assists so is not all doom and gloom.

Our main problem going forwards is a lack of coaching. We don't have the movement or understanding between our forwards. All the top teams can break defences apart with quick movement and one touch passing between their attackers. Its very obvious that when we are attacking any opposition that is sitting deep that we have no plan. We don't overload areas, we don't move the ball with any pace or purpose, we don't pull the defence about.

For some fans it always seems to be "we just need player X" or "we are lacking a world class player in position Y". We have a bloody good squad. There are some gaps like a good right winger but very very few sides have the luxury of top class players in every position so they can play in any way they want. Most sides in the PL are lucky if they have half a team of decent players. Managers should be making the most of what they have. Working within their constraints. Ole has very few constraints with this team. They are poorly coached. They are one dimensional and don't dictate the game.

Regardless of the result tomorrow, he needs to go, I fear he'll keep hanging on though and we'll get rid of him right after Poch gets a new job.

Nothing against the guy, I just don't think he's suitable.

Bruno's back must be in agony carrying the team, honestly though what a great signing, be lost without him and helping keep ole in a job

Yeah if he’s not firing we’re back to what we used to be. I guess that’s where VDB can step up, although they’re not really like for like from what I’ve seen so far but hopefully we see more from VDB. Especially if Pogba goes ;)

Well the 10 is always going to be the focal point of a team. I don't think he was the only one that performed at the weekend though, Fred, Maguire and Shaw were all excellent.

He scored a cracking header not many would have scored and put a cross in for Rashford that was a tap in if Rashford actually got to it (the one that drifted in for our second). He also set up Cavani for the third and put a few more chances through for Rashford to mess up. I agree that other players were good as well but without him we would arguably have had no goals in that game.
