My god, using proper DE shaving is cheap.

I've just placed my annual order of Feather blades from the Shaving Shack and it's come to only £23! You could spend that per month on crappy Gilette Mach whatever.

It is until you factor in the brushes, soaps, creams, aftershave balms and extra razors! Not that I've got lots of all of those things.. Yet!

Don't lie, you have the Shaving Shack stock in your posession posted here in the thread!

I said lots! I've got some. Well, three creams, two aftershave gels and two brushes. That's 'some' isn't it? :D

And it's not true that I have two more creams and a soap on the way and I've got a 'best offer' in for a vintage razor from my birth year on eBay, oh no, none of that is true *blush*

Is dry shaving allowed in this thread? :o

No seriously, I recently bought a half price (£45?) Philips PT860, my first dry/electric shaver, and it's absolutely brilliant.

It's quick, leaves no irritation at all (not even on neck), is physically unable to cut me, and is cheap to maintain (£30 head every 2 years). It also does just as good a job as my best attempts with a razor.

Or is electric the "dark side"? :p

I've never used any of those things - I shower then shave immediately after which I find works fine, even with my coarse stubble.

My Merkur 34C (recommended in this thread many years ago!) is brilliant, still in great condition.

I've never managed a close shave with an electric. In fact if I went to work having used an electric shaver I'd probably get grief and accused of not shaving :)

You use no shave soap/shave foam?

the grain changes half way down to the opposite direction and for some reason just hates been shaved. This is with a new blade.

Could you not try and shave it across the grain at an angle?

How many shaves do you get out of a featherless blade, most I have done is 2, not sure whether they are good for more??

As with most things shaving related, it seems to vary with individual as many factors will affect blade life - For example, some people will only do two passes whereas others will do four so that will make a difference. I can probably get four shaves out a Feather blade using three passes and a touch up whereas I get just two out of an ASCO or a Lord Platinum.

So therefore my attitude is that DE blades are cheap enough to use twice and then throw away. I know I can manage more from a Feather but two is easy to manage when you have more than one blade in your rotation. After the first shave I let the blade dry by itself and then put it back in the little paper envelope.

So with two uses per blade it's dead easy. When I take the blade out to shave, if it's clearly a first use then I leave the envelope on the side, if the blade has been used before then I throw the envelope away. That way, after the shave if there's an envelope there, I know to keep the blade but if there's no envelope then I dispose of the blade in the blade bank.

Dug mine out after not getting on with it last night, Put in a new Mekur blade watched the video on youtube lathered up and away I went, Best shave i have had in ages. I think it was all down to technique to much pressure on before and just going over the same area over and over with no lather.

with proper technique and lather I had no niks or cuts
