The Marvels

I wonder if this will bomb harder than Blue Waffles, I mean Beetle.
I'm not sure what Disney are thinking. This has two characters, part of the main cast, that anyone who hasn't got Disney+ and hasn't watched Wandavision from start to finish (and it was an easy show to stop watching early) and watched Ms. Marvel, won't have a clue about. It has potential BOMB written all over it.

You say that like they won't also establish characters within the film itself and let context speak for itself for the rest. You know, like happened in literally every film in a world before 700 hour long shared universes.

Was going to say a similar thing.

Captain Marvel only had Nick Fury and (briefly) Phil Coulson that audiences were familiar with (and only if they bothered to watch previous MCU movies) and that made a billion dollars.

Wasn’t Captain Marvel released directly before Endgame and her character teased in Infinity War. You couldn’t get a more favourable launch condition and we hadn’t seen how unlikable the character was at that point either. The situation for this release is a lot less favourable.

True, there's no way this is going to make a billion the way MCU movies have been performing.

GOTG Vol III has been the only real big MCU success this year.

Though when you look at box office for the MCU they are down a bit, but even 2022 was pretty good financial results for marvel studios, even if the output was worse than previous years.

Yup. I literally watched Cpt Marvel because I thought it would be essential viewing as part of the build-up to Endgame. I was far from the only one, I suspect. Hence a mediocre film made a billion dollars in the expectation of the need to see it to get the best from a truly good movie that came out straight after.

Kudos to Marvel, I guess, for successfully duping millions of filmgoers.

Followed by, negative kudos for then using that successful con to blame every subsequent piece of terrible writing later on misogeny as 'CM made a billion...', etc.

Beyond mental but we sure love some corporate welfare in this country. I think they're low balling when they say it needs to make $440m to break even - does it not have marketing budget?
