The Marvels

Not really low balling, because of the subsidy.
Every movie made in the UK gets a subsidy, anyway as pointed out above the final figure (without the marketing budget taken into account) is likely to increase by close to 100 million. This thing is looking like its going to be the most expensive movie ever made..

The UK government gave Marvel Studios a $55 million subsidy?!

Mental.
I just read the Film Tax Relief page on the British Film Commission. It states 25% tax relief on UK qualifying spend. Reading the case studies it implies only the UK spend. So a £44million rebate implies £176m of UK qualifying spend. I'd love to get some feedback from someone that understands this stuff as to if it is as clear cut as that.

With the rebate taken in to account, it's not currently in the top 40, but OK.

Why does the productions costs matter to me or the vast majority of casual viewers? It's not as if the price I pay for the cinema seat is proportional, will cost me the same to see as any other film showing at the cinema that week.

Edit: See it in IMAX (to help recoup the production costs :D )

It's currently 'cost' 275 million, that puts it at no 16, quite a few of the films above it were also made in the UK...

Have to say it's a first that the usuals are taking account rebates to try and downplay how much a film needs to break even, I wonder why that is

Is it worth creating a separate thread on the merits of different accounting methods and the lifecycle costs of a big budget Hollywood productions, you know for the shareholders and the negative nellies? It might get more views then this thread!

I doubt it. Maybe 20 or 30 of you might care about it, I'm planning to buy 40 tickets for The Marvel's myself. :D for every thread view you get I'll just buy another ticket.

Kind of like the pay it forward campaign for The Sound of Freedom. Seems like a good idea for films like these that no one really wants to watch!

Apparently the budget for this film was 275 million dollars. Add marketing, the final cost might be 400-500 million dollars.

Conclusion, this film will make back its money, just about. I predict 600 million dollars. Or maybe a slight loss.

Oh Marvel, why why why did you think The Marvels was a good idea.

Now that's a fun game.

How about people make predictions on how much money this movie will make in the box office (Say within the first 5 weeks of release or till shadows mate at the pumb tells us its going to streaming services :D ). Who ever guesses the closest without going over wins a sense of pride and accomplishment.

Guesses are locked in the day before release of the movie. So you can keep revising up to that point.

I'll post all the marvel movies for the year and their box office takings when I get back from the gym to help people make more accurate guesses.

I'll start off at $400 mill
