* The Metal Thread *

Looking forward to it, only started listening to them in earnest a few months ago and they aren't that varied, they have a definite "thing" which I wasn't sure I'd get into, but they do it damn well.

Absolutely. To be honest "The great war" and "the war to end all wars" have been some of their best content to date.

Given the "tour to end all tours" will be based off their latest album it should be an absolutely stonking gig.

link me to a couple of their songs please matey ?

What did you think? I saw them on Tues at Motorpoint Arena, really enjoyed it along with both supports Alien Weaponry and Employed to Serve.
Been a huge fan of Gojira since I caught them by chance at Download 2006.
We missed Employed to Serve, although I am not too fussed in truth.
Alien Weaponry we're alright, sounded good and had a fair sized crowd. Still got a lot of growing to do though.
Gojira played and sounded beautiful last night, everyone was loving it, I loved it. Cracking setlist choice too.

I'm not quite sure I understand why Sabaton and the likes of FFDP , their songs are always about war, why?

FFDP on the other hand do less about war than Sabaton

For Sabaton its just their gimmick, songs about wars and battles mainly european. Half their members left few years back and set up a band called Civil War, you guessed it metal about american history.
As for FFDP, think its more the portrayal of being an american bad ass' sort of thing, least thats the vibe I get.
Seen both bands, Sabaton are actually quite entertaining. FFDP were extremely underwhelming.

Found some old albums on a hard drive the other day and completely forgot about the band Caliban, appear to still be going too, guess I better catch up.
Anyone else used to be a fan? or still is?

CoF is an odd band - I know normal people that don't like metal that go along to M.Manson concerts then live CoF. Not normally my thing but that's interesting.

I'm normally a bit eclectic with taste, also depends on mood etc. I tend to like tunes that have some shifts in (Mary Jane for example) or have some composition (Nevermore Godless Endevour/NW etc) or melody, then there's the intense stuff (Bolt thrower/Panzerchrist/Messhuggah) through to normal.. like maiden etc. Been watching too many jazz videos (ie how the compositions are made up etc).. so any metal band now has got to have some saving grace.

Similar, although I've missed out on Bolt Thrower in my life to date - I'll look at educating myself tomorrow. Are you talking about Godless Endeavour the track, or album? It's a stellar album, and the title is phenomenal. For compositional stuff, there's also bands like Dream Theater, Symphony X, Haken, Periphery too. Suggestions for bands like them are always gratefully recieved.

Devin Townsend and Haken are both touring at the moment, and gutted that I'm missing the pair of them.

Bolt Thrower - they're like a heavy Sabaton - I like them because although they're thrashy/intense they have some melody to them:

Yes - SymphonyX is on the list, Portnoy is in Dream Theatre so being a sort of budding wannabe drummer.. that's on the list
Also the very very most excellent Domination:

Nevermore - yes the entire Godless Endeavour album is an unappreciated gem in my view.
