The most important vote of your gaming life

Then you need to redefine your views on what a character is, because you are wrong.

His a fictional character in which you play and due to the way Valve made the game, the character does not talk, the story is heavily orientated about it being told from other characters in the game. This does in no way not make him a character.

If he wasn't a character he would not have a pre-determined name, have the entire game revolve around him, history/future changed by him, have posters and pictures of him for game advertisements and lastly, be so well known in the gaming community. If he is not a character, what is he?

Being a character does not have certain strict requirements, there's such a broad variety of reasons why someone/something can be one.

Next time you try argue what a character is maybe know what you're talking about.

Either you've not played the game or you clearly didn't think hard enough!

Everything you learn about Freeman is through the game, as he does not speak, information is gained from other characters dialogue/gossip/background script. Not only that, there are odd things left around the game world for you to read and explore.

Unless you're one of those people that some how are oblivious to all of this whilst playing, then maybe you can enlighten me on how the hell you missed that obvious point. :p

Which still doesn't make him a better character.

Snake has more history and depth and has done a hell of lot more in gaming than Freeman.

Gordon Freeman
# Gordon Freeman was one of the few to survive the alien and government attacks on the Black Mesa research facility
# He has a Ph.D. in physics from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology
# Gordon upgraded his arsenal from submachine guns and a crowbar in Half-Life to a gravity gun in Half-Life 2

Snake
# Solid Snake has been taking on supersecret espionage missions for more than 20 years
# Snake has battled big bosses, giant robots, ninjas, traitors, clones, traitor-clones, and secretly saved the world many times over
# Snake began his first mission with nothing but a pack of cigarettes, fighting guards who "feel asleep!"

No brainer really.

Agreed tbh, Gordon has two of the greatest games ever under his belt, but no personality. To me that doesn't make him a particularly great character, but it doesn't affect my opinion of the games he is in. Snake however is one of the first 'deep' characters to ever be created in gaming, he was the key role in one of the first truely complex game storylines, he has complex relationships with complex characters, friend and enemy alike. Also he knows how to kick ass:

If i'm honest i think people have voted for the game, not the character.

PC owners are going to vote Freeman even if they have never played a MGS game. The votes are stupid.

I've played every HL game and every MGS game and nothing that Freeman has done I have remembered since he doesn't do anything.

Wassn't he the sole survivor when black mesa got attacked by aliens and humans?

Apart from save the world... twice?

That's not exactly a credential for best gaming character ever is it though? Hundreds of computer game characters have 'saved the world', including that little triangle in Asteroids. All Freeman has ever done is follow instructions, nothing more, he never makes a decision for himself he simply plods along the path laid out for him by other characters. I'm in no way debating the quality of the Half Life or Metal Gear franchise, just stating that Snake is a deeper, more interesting and ultimately imo a far better character than Gordon.

[EDIT] Oh and, being a mute isn't what makes Gordon an uninteresting character as some people seem to be arguing, Ico barely speaks a word but has more emotion tied up in his little finger than Gordon.

If he died, then there would be no game to play.

It might seem like a silly question... but I've never played half-life 1... I bought it off steam for a £1 then had no pc. :/ But I got to the end of half-life 2... a bit redundant I know...

Edit - Maybe I should play it now.

Where did I say it made him a better character?
That's if you're saying I did, because I didn't.

You cannot say one is better than the other, it's up to the eye of the beholder, it's stupid to argue that point.

I like that fact that on your level of what's better is having 20 years experience in a field, battling "big bosses" like Gordon Freeman hasn't and that fighting sleeping guards and starting with nothing but cigarettes does not compare to freeman starting with nothing, then a crowbar. Not saying you're wrong, But I'm saying you're silly for saying what you did. Almost as if you had no idea what you were talking about.

Like you picked some random facts, audited the ones out you thought would get in the way of what would make SS look better.
I could not care who won or lost in the end of the day but I never defended either as if I was right, it's petty

Those tad bits of info were from gamespot.

To me, Freeman is the greatest gaming character of all time. Snake lost to Freeman (but it was exceptionally close), so I'm happy with that. If other people aren't, then fair enough, but the facts speak for themselves... ;)

I'm still curious as to what makes gordon the best character ever in some peoples' eyes. Greatest games ever, very likely, but i see nothing about him that even makes him an average character. Anyone care to enlighten me? I'm not being judgemental, just honestly curious.
