The most 'skill' based games?

Any death match game with slow moving projectiles like rockets takes a degree of skill to hit your target.

Any RTS where Micro management to insane levels gives you the advantage - Although its a lot like Chess 75% of it, if not more, is set moves - build orders that you learn etc.

Any simulators - piloting skill etc.

MMO pvp ? Rarely these days is it skill - more RNG based and Experience and knowledge of the game engine. I suppose the skill element could come into the planning and execution of an attack.

Decent fighting games require large amounts of skill. Sure you can button mash, but in a game like Guilty Gear XX you're going to get crushed by anyone who knows what they're doing. In general though, I'd say things that are head-to-head are a better test of skill than team games, which are inherently more strategy based, and more than deathmatch style games because there's no way of keeping track of everyone and in that case a lot of luck is involved.

Yes, that's all part of the skillset too, but then I've seen lone pilots take out several energy advantaged enemy before, and that just shows that it is a factor in any situation.

It can be done, but generally in a furball.

Youre bringing back memories for me here :( I won a Voodoo 2 before from an oldschool WarBirds competition, #1 best ranked Fighter Pilot in the world for it. I miss those days. Shame the modern day mmo flight sims simply dont have the magic that used to.. Mainly because there are just so many other options, and we have grown to expect so much. The WW2OL air aspect for example is just pants compared, and is currently the best I can think of.

I think a key point people are missing in terms of skill required for quake is movement.

CS/COD etc are more about aim and use of cover etc.

To get good at quake you have to be able to move fast around a map.

Not saying that CS/COD etc are bad games or don't require skill, just think quake demands a lot more time to get good at it.

Oh and I always think that many RTS games require a hell of a lot of skill to get anywhere near good online

A Good demanding RTS for sure at top level

so much to plan control while trying to counter your opponent.

Mutiple unit controll, resosuce management, building bases, defence just to name a few

Just got back into Total Annihilation for like the 4th time :D Come find me on Warzone.

I think the main difference between QW and Q3 is the pacing rather than the "speed" so much - QW pacing is relentless in general whereas Q3 only really reaches that when duelling on hub. But in terms of action both are much of a muchness speedwise with QW possibly edging it a bit due to the more powerful rockets and shaft.

It's not just to the power of the weapons that affects the speed, it's stuff like:

-Enhanced air control
-More extreme bunnyhops
-Instant weapon switch
-No railgun (I'm not suggesting I dislike the rail, just that it can potentially slow the game down on some maps)

I'm not a fan of instant weapon switch personally - I actually think it takes away some of the skill aspect - theres less of a penalty for getting your weapon selection wrong in a situation.

COD4 is great fun - but for real skill it needs a lot of tweaking - so that you can play hardcore mode - so that theres a fair degree of acc. on the first 1-3 rounds or so but a lot of spread/recoil after that - to keep people from spamming to get kills with the high damage.

Last time I played servers either seemed to be low damage so you had to spam forever to get kills and it came down to a mixture of luck or who had the best internet connection, or high damage/hardcore but too much accuracy on the guns so someone could just spam the area enemy were likely to be and get a load of kills.

to me your looking at that from a public server perspective i assume? in wars promod which is default cod4 with a lot of changes really helps the game be more skilful.

but still, cs > cod4 in skill level hehe

Hee :D. I remember being gobsmacked the first time i played online. Deadified, repetitively, within minutes :(

EDIT: On reflection, that was probably more down to being used to the shoddy AI :p

Most of my comments were from the pub perspective...

but the part about the guns still holds true - a lot of leagues seem to have it setup for reduced damage, etc. promoting a less skillful play style where its all about how well you can control your "spam" and how good an internet connection you have...

IMO to see true combat skill at work you need higher damage and the first couple of shots having tighter acc... but increasing levels of recoil and spread after that.

That way if you get the jump on someone - and your aim is on - you will kill them - if your aim isn't on they will then get a chance to out play you.

Currently with typical non-hardcore/league settings if you get the jump on someone they have enough time to react and start firing back and it somehow comes down to luck who actually wins (not to mention the people who then have time to kick in their "lag hacks")

I've started playing QW occasionally, and most of the time I'm spawning into a rocket/nade/lightning gun firefight and getting killed instantly. When that doesn't happen, I still have to risk it to get a decent weapon to fight back, which is rarely successful. :(
