You might not like this :( I used MSI Live update 3 to flash the BIOS  I must admit I'd have preferred doing it the old fashioned way.

I know that was risky; but I couldn't get it to reconise my hdd from boot disk. So as I have cable Broadband I risked it.

Hope this helps

Should have one of these coming tommorow. I don't realy want to read 35 pages so are there any do's/dont's with thees boards. I plan to Overclock my CPU if that makes any difference.

Just got an email off Msi, they are working on the bios now to fix the 1T problem on the Neo2 Plat and 3700+ SD

xolotl - ya lazy so n so :)

Here is post #912 when someoneelse asked that question....

Yeah - another vote for "a darn fine board". Definately worth giving the thread a bit of a read though. Look for the notes about:
  • Put your SATA drives on port 3 and 4 if overclocking. Port 1 and 2 are not locked so overclock at the same time.
  • For dual channel use different coloured memory sockets. (My Geil is in slot 1 and slot 2)
  • If overclocking, don't use Cool 'n' Quiet.
  • Also don't overclock with the "CoreCentre" software as it sometimes locks up. Overclock the old fashioned way using the BIOS.
  • Decent PSU required with at least 20A on the 12volt rail. (Though my system is working with this Thermaltake PSU which only has 18A on 12volt. Quality is important )
  • A link to the MSI Downloads Page. I bought my board a coulpe of months back now, and it turned up with the latest official BIOS (v1.5). There is a v1.6 in existance, but doesn't seem to of had an official release yet.
  • I used the latest nVidia chipset drivers, v5.10, from www.nvidia.com as the MSI ones were out of date.
So I have just saved you from having to read the thread now. That covers most of the important stuff, ya lazy git. You now owe me a beer

P.S. There is also another good reason for the length of the thread, it was started in August 2004!!

Thanks mallen. Just saved me a good 3 hour read of this thread.

Incidently does anyone know what the best bios to use is. My board is comming with the 1.4a installed. Is it worth flashing it?

What chip are you getting? I've got bios 1.8 on at the moment, but 2t on the memory, which can't be changed. (3700+ SD). Maybe wait until MSI bring out the new bios that covers all the new chips.

The chip will be a 3500 Newcastle. The memory is ddr500 ballistix. Im hoping I should be able to get it up quite high, 2.4 should be easy?

The HSF will be an Akasa evo33, its rated very highly in the revies of it, there just arnt many.

Post 1012 has a link that is very useful ;)

Just a quick question. I'm just about to buy a gig of ram for my system (k8n neo2 plat)

I want the best performence/stability & I'm not oc'ing, although I am a gamer. My two probable choices being as it has to be cheapish:

G.Skill 1GB DDR ZX PC3200 (2x512MB) CAS2 Dual Channel Kit

GeIL 1GB (2x512MB) PC3200 Value Dual Channel Kit CAS2.5

1hr of thread searching & I still can't decide, can anyone help me choose?

The Gskill has better timings so I'd go for that (and better oc'er even though you aren't using for that), although I've heard somewhere about compatability problems somewhere (not specifically for this board), anyone else know about that? Or am I going mad :D

Ok Peeps - the first problem I have had with my MSI Neo2 so far :(

I have 2x512Mb OCZ PC4400 DDR which has been working fine and dandy @ 250FSB (250x10).

I have just purchased 2x512Mb of Corsair XMS PC4000 DDR to put into slots 3&4.

With the Corsair in 3&4 - it won't POST at 250FSB (tried up to 2.85v through the RAM) :(

Running quite an old bios i think (if it ain't broke - don't fix it!).

Any suggestions as to things to try to get the ram working together?

Cheers.

See the picture here.
Also note..

DDR 333 with all dimms populated with Double Side memory which I expect is what you have.
You gonna have to fiddle with this, but it clearly states..
Please select the identical memory modules to install on the dual channel.

I would guess it might be better (assuming you are using 4 sticks) to have one lot in 1 and 3, and the other 2 in slots 2 and 4.

To get any speed out of it, you are going to have to run it out of sync tho.

That's not the way MSI runs their dual channel though. The two closest the cpu are A&B and the two furthest away are A&B. Juggling them may get them to work if they're picky about working at all, but getting 250MHz out of them isn't going to happen. You may be able to get them to overclock to 200MHz, but it's a limitation of your cpu (guessing you don't have Venice or SD).

It also clearly states in the manual that running with four...blah...blah...blah... 166MHz.

Sheesh - this is comes up all the time - and its all in the manual!

LOL.... RTFM  Who reads the manuals when lazy ******* can post on here instead. These are the same people who don't know that forums have search abilities...

This is called "consitant confusion". Helped out by some motherboard manufacturers using one colour coded method, and others using a different layout.

In the MSI's case. It is clear as mud. Dual channel works as pairs of different colours. Pair up in 1&2 and 3&4. So you set it up the right way, but as the manual says, you ain't got much chance of it working.

Better bet is to flog all that RAM on E-Bay and get a couple of 1GB sticks instead.

Is there a reason for this? Is this the same for all s939 boards? Seems a little odd to me (not knowing how mem architecture works) that you can run 2 sticks at DDR500+ but with 4 sticks you have to run them at DDR333. :(

I'm not the best person to answer this as I only use two sticks. :)

I can understand why you are having problems with two different brands of memory there. This would mean trying to synchronise two different controllers with two different types of RAM. So giving it a tough job.

I don't have the manual to hand. But if the manufacturer says you can't do it, then I would tend to believe them. :)

You'd probally get some better answers on this in the memory part of this forum. Though remember that your MSI is always "1&2" and "3&4" when pairing. Many other manufactures confuse this with different pairings. So many "experts" will tell you to use different slots....

K - thanks :)

Problem is OCZ don't make the stuff I have anymore :( Which means either selling this and getting 2x1Gb sticks (which are difficult to get in DDR500), or 4x512mb of the same brand, or try a different mobo...

/me goes to badger the peeps in the DFI mobo thread... ;)
