The my 360s DVD Drive has just given in thread :(

It might just be that the laser is dirty or something as simple. My brothers friends 360 was making strange noises and wouldn't even ejects let alone play a game. I took it apart cleaned the laser, cleaned the gears up and the elastic band that opens the drawer and it now works fine.

Its easy to open the 360, have a google and you'll find loads of guides. You have to make a tool to open it but you can use an old DVD cake tub to make it. If you have no luck I'll find the guide i used.

Everyone of the 3 360's ive had have done that, even from new.
The current one doesn't like loading the ford GT40 on PGR4 and just gives up random errors new and again.

When this one carks it I'm not getting another one, ill just ship the carcass in the bin and trade the games in for some PS3 stuff.

Funnily enough my disc drive doesn't work went vertical, i mean it will not load anything to do with my forza2 disc.

But i do get some read errors with all games on occasion, with forza2 being the most frequent. But the problem hasn't been as bad recently. My only regret is that if it does break there's a chance any replacement parts will not be as quiet as my current ones which are relativly quiet compared to my friends.

The POT tweak consists of taking the drive apart and turning the potentiometer a tiny bit, to provide more power to the lens, making it brighter and therefore making it easier to detect pits in the disc.

Plenty of guides on google if you want pictures to accompany my description.

My drive packed in on Saturday :( Mine's a Hitachi and the console's out of warranty.

I did ring M$ and they wanted £59.91 to repair it, and it would take a while. The guy on the phone gave me a (rather comical) lecture that I shouldn't buy Xbox's second hand.

Would like to echo spoonjaffa's request for a guide to replacement please.

mine packed up the other week, i had a hitachi aswell. it wasnt spinning fast enough to load games...

i bought a new hitachi from the auction site for £25 delivered. i think my old one was a 47dj and the replacement was a 59dj or something. all you need to do is swap the pcb into it from the old drive and the new one will work fine :)

took about 1 hour to do, most of that time was spent making a 'key' out of a cd spindle to open the 360 case...never opened a 360 before

spaceman, wow cheers for that, that sounds like something i can try!

How easy was the PCB swap, and was your drive from Hong Kong? Cheers.

yep from hong kong, once the dvd drive case is open, only 4 little ribbon cables hold the pcb in :)

Why? It takes 10 seconds to open the case with a toothpick.

maybe if you've opened one before, if you havent it takes longer ;)

the key thing was for the 5 clips on the back by the ethernet port, its not like it was much hassle, just followed an 'open your 360 case with damaging it' walkthrough, lol

I tried this but i found its far easier to depress all the catches at once. If you own a dremel and a permy marker it takes all of 2 mins to make the keys. If you can do it with a toothpick then fair enough but the one i was working on was having none of it.

Im assuming not but my xbox has run out of warranty and is refusing to play disks, it makes a weird noise and says unreadable disk on the dashboard. Assuming I open it up and cant get it to work, would microsoft still repair it for the 60 pounds they have originally offered to repair it for me?

Both 360 and PS3 versions of GTA4 preordered (not intentionally, I did not realize I had preordered the PS3 version half a year ago until today where I read a dispatched email) - and what I'm going to do, is put the PS3 version in a glass box, with a label:

***in case of RROD emergency/DvD Drive error, smash glass***

Sad.

DVD drive on my second 360 died last week too. This one is a replacement for the first one whose drive also died. With the first one, I had a go at the retailer re. SOGA and they arranged a free repair with MS. Haven't gotten to send it to them yet though....and now I have to send two of them in.

Oh well, in the years of owning 360s so far at least I haven't seen the RROD :D

Just to update, I plucked up the courage to open my xbox (not as hard as I thought) and I definately have the magnet issue as per metallic's advice. I need to wait for the shops to open tomorrow now to get some superglue to glue the magnet down in the black plastic hole!
