Thank God for honest tradespeople. Door guy came yesterday, says we're better off to get the frame rescrewed into the brick, who ever installed it didn't do a great job. Same for the lock (barrel too long). So only low £hundreds of work needed (front and back locks changed, frame reseated) rather than the £2,500 I had estimated, which was laughably off - his quote came in at £4,400.

£4,400 is a joke...

I got a solidor composite door 5 months ago.
Custom + removal of old door + fitting = £1685
10 year guarantee

They're nationwide but they hire local installers so your experience may vary

Yeah quotes seem wildly different and agreed nearly £5k is a joke. A friend on OcUK had quotes go all the way up to £7k. Even Everest's website (who came yesterday), say allow for around £2,500 for a composite and fitting. Here are the details of the quote and thanks for the suggestion @tamzzy

Anyone here recently had a Mortgage with Nationwide?

My application is with the underwriters and wondering how long it typically takes? Appreciate it probably varies somewhat.

Had a text this morning to say they've issues an offer so just under a week I think. Now just waiting on the postman the next few days then. :D

How easy is it to fit a front door yourself? There seem to be loads of new composite doors on Marketplace for under £500 including frame.
Screws packers and foam - the issue is if your opening isn't Bob on and you need spacers.

that's a absolute **** take

unless it's surrounded by a loada glass panels as well.
I'd expect a half decent composite for be 2-2.5 at the top end

tbh if its just rescrewing and possibly a quick bit filler and new barrels id forego the hundreds n just order the locks yerself.
they are a doddle to fit, as for the rescrewing, that could be as simple as tightening up what's there

As I said before, it's hilarious that their own website says allow up to £2,500 for a composite, frame and fitting - yet the actual quote comes in almost double that. I didn't realise locks aren't too difficult, might consider but with the frame - we're right at the start of learning DIY. In this case, we might just want it done right. A number of the internal doors need their handles changing as well so doing the locks might be a good start for us :).

Meeting a plumber tomorrow (ugly small pipe sticking out of a bedroom upstairs) along with a painter/decorator and carpenter. Move in day this Friday, nearly there.

Exchanged today and move next week! Massive project on our hands now. Building a house beside the property we have purchased :)

Is that something you and the family will be doing or paying builders to do?

I do wonder what the cost of such a thing is these days. Builders simply charge way too much. To the point it out me off and I am thinking I am better of selling and buying a bigger place than paying builders silly moneys.

We will contract out the majority of the build. Looks like it will be 2000-2500 per SQM depending on how involved we get. That puts total build at about 25-30% lower than buying a comparable property.

Electrician almost done, new carpets today, new (fitted) fridge being installed today, internet being installed tomorrow and new bed and washing machine arriving at the weekend. And then the network guy comes on Monday so I get to play with my the new network gear.

We're going to attempt filling (Polyfiller) cracks etc in a wall ourselves, prep and paint at the weekend - need to start that DIY journey.

Haha, only about 50 meters of hedge!

We had the whole frontage changed from a 2m high privet, ivy and bramble hedge with a lawn full of tree stumps behind it. Completely removing the hedge, grinding the stumps and a new lawn. It's much lighter now. Not 50m though.

Think we will go for a 3ft stone wall and plant a laurel or hornbeam behind it. Should appease the neighbours when we get rid of the miniature forest blocking out all light!

Mortgage offer received for my purchase and a fixture and fittings list too from my solicitor.

Think I'm waiting on searches to be complete now and whatever else needs doing. Feels like the half way point now or there abouts.

Hoping it coincides with annual leave I already have booked. :)

Top tip - try and do the polyfill stuff when you are at a lose end during the week. You don't want to waste a clean day filling, waiting for it to dry, sanding it too early, not letting it fully cure etc.

It's a nice job to do with headphones on listening to a YT/Podcast whatever. I find you do a much better job when you aren't pressing on to 20 other jobs the same day.
